so ill be sitting at a light and i can not shift into first gear. i have to shift into second gear then shift up. and while im driving i notice it is a rough shift. can i get some ideas what the problem is. im thinking it might be the synchroids but i can be wrong. please help.

sorry, its a 01 and its 5- speed i believe its the m86 transmission..
i have a 05 sunfire 2.2 ecotec my car kinda did the same thing depending on if you beat on it or how many miles you have could be the sycros but my prob was i had a lil air in my hydrolic clutch line causeing the pedal to not totally engage making first gear kinda rough to get into... but not much trouble with the other gears... dont know for sure but figure i would let you know...

I used to have that exact same problem on my 03 Getrag.... mine turned out to be the shift cables, simply out of adjustment. Try it with the engine off, just sitting in the driveway. If it's exactly the same off or on, then it might be the cables like mine was.
All I did was take out the centre console, snap the two cable ends off... then centred the shifter handle, and snapped the cable ends back on. Works minty now

I had the same problem in my izuzu. Obviously there's not an option of adjusting the cables but I'm going to try bleeding my clutch cyl for the 3rd time...

If it's hard to change gears in an Isuzu chances are good you have melted the rubber surrounding the shift cables where the cables run near the exhaust.

have this problem now too, can shift fine if the car is off, but when started it will sometimes not even let me shift into first, and will be difficult with other gears, but other times it is fine, and ideas?

having a similar problem with my getrag on my 04 cavalier..ill come to a stop and wont go into first and ill end up having to pump the clutch pedal a few times just to get it to go into first. And it shifts hard into other gears especially at a higher rpm..what could the problem be?

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
check the inspection hole on the bottom of the trans for a leaking slave also check the inside firewall carpet for a leaking master cylinder. also check the line for leaks and make sure your cap is sealed proper.
