F23 - Specifications, dimensions, documentation
Hey all, I'm researching the F23 trans for a project vehicle I'm putting together. I've been reading and searching for 2 days now and have learned alot about the transmission, from many of the posts. But many threads have dead links to pics from hosting sites so I figured I'd ask if anyone has some information I'm looking for.
What is the spline count and dimension on the half shafts ?
What is the distance on the case from the left to right outputs ? (approximate)
Anyone make a spool for this trans ?
What is the ring gear size?
What bearings are used on the carrier ?
Any detailed technical docs floating around?
Any information greatly appreciated.

Update: I ended up getting a FSM and bought a F23 transaxle and I was able to answer all my own questions. I split the unit apart and have the diff/carrier out to a machine shop to see what kind of spool they can whip up for me.
Anyone have a pic of a stock clutch disk? I've got and S10 flywheel and clutch disk/pressure plate. Books call for same flywheel and it matches the parts/pics I've seen. But as I don't have a cavalier clutch setup to measure and compare the measurements. I found a GM application for a 9-1/8" x1" 14T disk and its a normal looking disk but without seeing if the cavalier disk is some how different I'm not 100% on its fitment. I plan to try it anyway, but be nice to know that I'm not paving any new paths..
Also if anyone cares, after taking the f23 apart I now know why they seem to not hold up well long term more so with hard driving. The carrier bearings are junk SKFs. My unit was from a normal DD car with 47k and the oem bearings are not wearing well and there was no preload on them at all.. Easy to see how the carrier gets loose. I will replace them with Timkens/Koyo and they should hold up a little better.

I gotta disagree. I beat the utter piss out of mine daily and it's never once hiccuped. Explain what you mean about how the carrier 'gets loose' if you would. Those bearings are in fact preloaded, they're the only ones in the F23 that are. There's a specific procedure for it, using a specialty tool.

LOL ya they are preloaded when new, but as the bearing wears in it won't hold that for their entire life. So combined with the carrier being short (not much distance between bearings) any amount of play can mean more movement at the ring gear. I agree that the trans is a nice unit but as I said I was surprised to see cheap bearings on the carrier. I wouldn't be wasting my time with it if i didn't think it wouldn't hold up to what I will be doing with it. WHo know maybe it wont.
Your method of beating on it is a little different than mine. I didn't post much details as this is a j-body site didn't figure anyone would care but I'm simply using the drivetrain for a low budget lightweight rear engine 4x4 buggy. The spool will drive front/rear drive shafts to flipped toyota axles. The ~7.5" ring gear is pretty large in comparison to a similar size t-case hell the axles only have 8" ring gear. The 3.95 final drive is acting as the t-case low range. I won't have or need a high range as this will be trail only with top speed ~40mph (w/ 36" tires).
Group buy ? on the spool ? - Probably should see what mine cost me first.. though not sure if what I plan to run would work well for a car. The shop can cut external splines, which is what i wanted. The spool will have external splines extending beyond the case halves w/ threaded end to accept a toyota diff/case flange and nut to secure them. This shop can't broach internal splines in-house and would have to send that out but with enough demand im sure they would do a run or 2. They do a lot of one off low run custom parts for 4x4 people but im sure they take your guys money too
I need to track down the tranny mounts as well as a cable shifter setup... I'll try to upload some pics if anyone is interested, just a pile of parts layed out on the floor at the moment.
