Alrighty i need a little help on which tranny to look for. I ws wandering what your opinion on these transmissions are and which one you would recomend. All thought's would be appretiated and help me deeply. Thanks Headthumper

nvg=best. however... you cannot get any replacement parts so basically... if you mess one up, you have to try and find one again. and over and over again.
getrag-second place. plenty of cars came with them so finding replacement parts as well as actual tranny's is easily done.
izuzu- syncros are junk. and they are getting harder to find. however, parts can be found.
Needing 2.3 oil pump stuff? PM me...
I am assuming that the "nvg" is the "getrag T550"
I had never heard of a T550 before... but have heard of the NVG... so if they are one in the same that would explain it.
and what exactly makes the NVG so much better than the getrag? and what did the NVG come in? (or was it one of those red headed step children that was just randomly slapped in cars without warning, like when they ran out of getrags.. "darn it! Thats all we got? well i guess go grab a few of those good ones from the back, damn, i was hoping we didnt need them, and i could take those home"
I much prefer the Getrag F-23. It has taken my abuse well, the parts are plentifull if you somhow need them, and all you have to do is change the bell housing to use it on any 2000 year plus jbody regardless of what engine it had.

what do you do, just replace the one half of the case?
NVG is right down the road here from my house, couple of my buddies work there too. Except its NPG now after magna bought most of it up.

Correct, However swapping case half's is easy.

Depends on what the intended use is.
First:
NVG for normal or racing
Second:
Isuzu for DD use (i am in a minority group on this one)
F23 for beating the @!#$ out of because it is cheap but not as strong as a NVG
Third:
F23 for DD use as I find it less precise and more annoying to live with than an Isuzu
Isuzu for race use as apparently they dont like it.
I have been through 6 or 7 F23s in my 02. My 98 is on its second Isuzu. The Isuzu is lighter, more compact, and has held up great for what my 98 was put through. The F23 is cheap compared to the Isuzu ($450 vs. $2050) but is rather noise and lacks the precision in shifting that my Isuzu has (I attribute this to teh plastic shifter mechanism for the F23).
My F23, with a blower on it from 28K....lasted till 126K.... With me racing it every weekend for 2 years...
Cant knock it.
But I like the tad better gearing of my NVG, and the fact it has an external slave.
Today I installed a new Isuzu...... all I can say is this, other then being smaller and lighter to install....... @!#$ THAT THING... the dip stick is a bitch to get to.... and you have to remove the cable bracket to remove the trans bolt.....
