Intermittent 3 Speed Issue
Sunday, January 25, 2009 10:50 AM
Lately in the morning when I start my car and move it up towards the house, the reverse gear has been taking its time to get into gear, It normally would be like a 4 second delay. Now this morning it was about 5 degree and I went to put it in reverse, wouldn't go in, just revved up and wouldn't move, put it in park, tried it again, same thing, once more, and it finally budged after about 6 seconds. Just wondering if there is anything I need to worry about. The car is a 2000 cavalier, has a 2.2 and has about 102,000 miles on it.
All other gears work just fine when driving normal.

sounds like the fluid is low/needs to be changed.

I was going to look into a change once spring rolls around. Being that the car is the age it is. What fluid do you recommend and just a pan and filter drop?

I wouldn't do a flush. Just a pan drop/filter change and Dexron 3 fluid.

I need a definite amount of what to buy,
part number for filter and amount of fluid.

I use B&M Original TrickShift (Hurst is Hot Shift). 4 quarts is needed for a pan drop and filter change. The counter person should be able to get you the filter and gasket (the part # will vary according to the manufacturer).

stupid no edit,
anyways.
When you meant the parts counter person, are you saying dealership or just a typical autozone should carry the filter?

Autozone, Advance, Pep Boys (had a really good price on the B&M TrickShift last time I was there), etc...

OK BACK AGAIN!

Did the trans flush about a week ago, went great. Fluid levels all good.

NOW

At WOT in 1st gear it will not shift into second until I let off the gas, it ran up pass the 6k mark on the tach today, figured it would shift, but hit the redline and bounced about 2 times, scared me sh*tless and let off. Shifts fine otherwise, and shifts fine at wot through 2nd-3rd.
What is going wrong now?

Did you do an actual flush or just drop the pan and filter? A flush in an old transmission can make your problems worse, as opposed to a pan drop. It's starting to sound like you need a tranny, man.

Sounds like the TV cable may need to be adjusted. It is the lower of the two cables going to the throttle linkage wheel on the side of the TB. There is a button on the side of the cable housing at the bracket. Push this button in (will probably be very difficult, may need to use a tool) and slide the cable out till it stops. Then press the accelerator pedal to the floor firmly. You should hear the locking mechanism ratcheting. That should have the TV cable reset.

It's on the side of the black square part on the outside of the throttle bracket.

I know this is on a 2.2L, but the 2200s I've see had similar cables. The lower cable is the TV cable. One side has the round bulge, that is the return spring housing, the other side is the button. It is flush to the sides. The button is usually pretty tight, I use a screwdriver to press the button in, the pull the cable sheathing out away from the bracket.

I only did a pan drop, didn't mean to say flush.

I'll check into the cable adjustment and get back.

I didn't fix the TV cable yet, idk if it needs it or not.
But, went wot today and it didn't jump about 5600, running normal again...

What is going on?
