Hi, I have a 99 2.2 OHV with a 4 speed auto 120k mi. It has been acting funny lately. First occurrence I was going over speed bumps and it just started reeving up with no push on the gas pedal. I had to cut the car off in gear b/c it wouldn't change. Then when I cut it back on it was fine. That was a while ago. Then recently I was switching from R to D a lot b/c I was stuck on a dead in that was a hard place to back up ,and when I finally got straight and going in D it felt like it wasn't going above 1st. So, I came to a stop then pushed the gas again and it was fine. I have never serviced the transmission or added fluid at all b/c in the owners book and my Haynes book it says it's sealed and needs no service. Wondering if this sounds like a trans. problem and if so or if not then what might it be? Thanks in advance for any help!

my manual says to service every 50000 miles, says nothing about it being sealed and needing no service. I service mine every 10k just because I do alot of city driving.
engine revving without pressing on gas doesnt sound like a tranny issue. When this happened to me, it was the IAC.
hope it helps...

I think there are 2 dif types of autos in the cavs. One is servicable and one is not. I also asked a service place about it and they said the same thing about it being sealed. They said all you can do is flush it, but they wouldn't recommend it. They also said I would have to sign a waiver if I wanted it flushed. Not sure if this is correct either.
I am not sure what your transmission issue may. But, I think I would shy away from a professional transmission shop that told me the transmission is sealed and can not be serviced. I have one of those 'sealed' units in my 2001 Sunfire. At 90K miles I purchased a filter kit from a local parts store. I dropped the pan - which of course drained the transmission fluid - cleaned up the pan, and replace the filter unit. The pan gasket is very high qualify on mine, and reusable. Better gasket than came in the kit. I put ~ 8 quarts fluid in through the filler cap, then loosened the top line from the transmission at the cooler (in the radiator) and slipped a clear hose over the line. I had my wife start the car in park and let it idle. I about a minute or so it filled a one gal container. I had her turn the engine off and reinstalled the line to the cooler. I did this to flush out most of the used fluid from the torque converter. There is a check/drain plug on the side of the transmission, passenger side, VERY close to the exhaust pipe. 10 mm in size maybe? Start the car while it is level, slowly move the gear selector through all the gears - R, D, 2, 1 to purge air out of the transmission. Then, while idling in park, add fluid through the fill until it drips out of the check port. Replace the check plug and turn off the engine. Job well done!
I don't know if this will help your transmission. It is kind of expensive - the kit and 10 quarts of Dex VI fluid cost about $100.00. But - any competent transmission shop should know they can be serviced.
Good luck.
