Quick question, I have a 96 Z24 5 speed which is currently in storage. Drove it fine back in October then put it op on jackstands for the winter. I usually go out and start the car and put it in 1st or 2nd gear to let the tranny get some work. I've kinda slacked for a bit, maybe a month and a half or so, and went out to run it today and the drivers side wheel doesn't spin much. The passenger side is spinning just fine, but the drivers side goes a few revolutions, then stops, goes and stops... you get the idea. Now, when it stops it makes kind of a grinding noise. With the trans in nuetral the wheel spins fine by hand..... any ideas? It is 15 degrees right now, not sure if that would cause anything with it just sitting. Thanks in advance!
I think it's supposed to do that since it's an open differential. As a matter of fact, i'm pretty sure mine did that when I had the front end up in the air. And mine still works fine. The grinding.... if it's got high mileage (it is 13 years old) the teeth in the diff. itself might be getting somewhat worn down.
Honestly man, i wouldn't worry about it. Mine's sat in the same spot for about 4 months, and I just drove it the other day. I don't even move it around. Works just fine for me. Just take it easy on it for a bit when you start driving, and let the oil circulate around some.
Yeah, I was wondering about the differential, it's just weird cause I let it run all the time on the jacks and they've always both spun no problem!! Thanks for the suggestion, hopefully when I get it back out, it works just fine!!
I agree you don't have to worry about it. It could be as simple as one brake caliper dragging a hair more than the other due to normal surface rust from non-use (or maybe the rotor is a hair warped). It's in the 20'sF here now. Should be getting above freezing (daytime) later this week. WooHoo.
