Punctured hole in tranny pan trying to enter car-wash, backed up immediately upon not clearing and parked the car.
Called tow service to transfer it a whopping block to the shop whom does my work at times. Dispatch says a half hour and he'll be there, I agree to meet him.
I grab money and arrive 10-15 minutes later, mind you giving him time to arrive and allow me to be there when he does such. Immediately as I pull up I throw out a line of swear words as he winches my car up the flatbed from the front with it in park. I get out, angrily ask "shouldn't the car be in neutral?" To which he jokes about the tranny fluid on the tires assisting. I let it go, though become weary once he asks for the keys to neutral it off down the road.
It's unconventional hillbilly tow was the least of my concerns at that time so I sign off the bill to reach it's destination, until today. Fast forward to today, I fork out big money on a new trans pan, filter, and fill. I pick the car up, all is well.
Until home when is it sitting in park as I move the trash can out of the drive it begins a horrible noise much like trying to engage the starter while a car is running. Initially I thought that's what it was! It wasn't.
It's the trans and only does it in............park!
I'm at a loss for words right now. I drove it back to the shop shutting it down and starting it in neutral, releasing keys in park once off. Just looking into possible damage scenarios + any firsthand experience with this.
I've seen it done before. On my brothers wrecked Escort because it got stuck in park after the accident. And i'm pretty sure that if they repo a car and the keys are not given up, they'll just drag it up onto the tow truck. I would imagine that dragging it in park probably won't damage it, but the constant jerking on it when they're trying to get it on the flatbed is what did it.
I would bring it up to a manager there at the towing company and explain the situation. Tell them that you're going to go get an estimate on tranmission replacement and bring it back to them so they can settle on it. Don't ASK them, tell them that's what is going to happen. Then get your estimate and bring it into them.... they'll most likely be dicks about it and not want to pay for the damage they caused (which they can claim on their insurance most likely). After that, I guess.... small claims court probably.
Luckily the car wash/gas station is very new and has an impressive camera setup, so my first priority is trying to obtain footage of him towing my car inproperly tomorrow. Hopefully.
The female manager was a sweetheart when it came to discussing whether their insurance would cover my pan, it wouldn't as I'm dropped, footage showed that, and I accepted responsibility despite her constant apologizing. Point being, I think if possible/her choice, I'll get my footage.
It went up smoothly/no jerking, but I didn't see the initial tug either. It was pretty much on the bed when I arrived.

heres my suggestion...
grab largest gun possible... preferably an ak47, but an oozy will do to...
point gun into said towing company's front office... spray off a full clip and add additional clips as needed until desired kill number has been reached.

wow...that is some @!#$ bud. My guess is that the parking pawl is bent/broken. I would say that they are to blame and you have every right to be compensated for it. They were not towing a vehicle that was illegally parked or being repossessed, so they need to make sure they are towing it carefully.

Or at least PROPERLY. Besides, shouldn't a tow truck have dollies for the drive wheels, just for this sort of problem?
My first bad experience with a towing company took place last year 14 hours away. I'm good friends with a married couple, he was away on a 6-month Navy deployment, his car was parked in his apartment guest area as they had suggested during this time. Everything was current minus the inspection which failed within his 6-months. Problem was that it was a 5-speed, his wife couldn't drive it, and they figured no big deal. Wrong. It got towed. The fact they towed this car from a girl whom couldn't even drive it while her husband is out to sea angered me alone. What also angered me was that said car was a WRX and that became a huge concern. Upon questioning their towing/scam practice and insulting him for towing the car with her circumstances I asked how the if the car was towed correctly being it's AWD. He hesitated and then claimed how they always use dollies for AWD vehicles. She found a driver to get it back, paid a decent amount to do such, and once home his car needed differential work. Go figure.
I'm beginning to think mine isn't tow-related. It is confirmed that the starter is trying to engage. Does it with engine running and
only in park. Seems wiring or relay related for sure? I have no idea where to begin. There was aftermarket alarm wiring/possible remote start? under the dash but brain etc. was removed. Seems random that such would begin right after all these other events but possible. Off to the maintenance forum.
Could possibly be a pinched wire on the starter. Im thinking the ground for the solenoid. But i have never worked on a LD9, so i cant be sure.
Just seeing if you have made any progress joe?

Nah, I bumped a post in the maint. forum, plan on creating my own if no response comes. Attempting to crank when car is running only in park, strange.
After last night and sleeping the day away recovering I have no motivation. I'll just turn the key, put it in neutral, start, and shut it off the same to avoid having it running in park. I might head out to my grandparent's heated garage tomorrow to look it over, if not the shop whom did the work on the pan volunteered to on Monday.

It just seems strange that the car would have a starter issue, after being drug onto a flat bed. I wish you the best of luck in your search though.

...hmmmm hey Clyde, think that starter solenoid (the recall J car one) on the core support could do that? if it found power somewhere? Seen stranger @!#$.
it would be interesting with a DVMO to look at.
