P0742 Torque Converter Code
Sunday, November 30, 2008 6:17 PM
The check engine light in my bro's sunfire has been on and off for the past couple of months, i haven't really worried to much about it because i knew it was only to do with the o2 sensor. Anyway i scanned it again today and got the same o2 sensor code as expected but i also was given the code P0742 Torque Converter Circuit Stuck On. Haven't had this code before, brother hasn't complained of any issues with it. After reasearching a little most web pages said its a problem with the tcc solenoid and it needs replacing. Just want to find out if anybody has any other ideas why it may have come on or am i going to need to replace this part?

Most of the sites were not to do with J's that i got the info from and although i would expect the answers to be roughly the same i thought id make sure with you guys seeing as this forum is specifically for J's.

That's a common problem with the autos with the TCC. As the trannies get older the TCC solenoids have a tendancy to stick. Replacing them ususally fixes that problem. You could cut the wire to the TCC solenoid, but then the CEL will come on again when the TCC doesn't activate. Your fuel milage will suffer and you'll heat the fluid more, causing more wear on the tranny.
