Ecotec Clutch Idea/Question
Thursday, November 13, 2008 7:26 PM
First my situation... About a year ago I purchased the SPEC stage 3 Clutch. It worked well at first. Minor slipping but that was when I was only putting down 289wtq. Now that I am putting down 302wtq the clutch does not hold in first or second. Slips on engagement in 3rd sometimes too.

I wanted to switch to the stage 3+ to help with the tq issue. I however cant just purchase the disc on its own... Please correct me if I am wrong. (Dont want to shell out the $600 for the whole)

The Idea (got this from a 5.0 guy)... He mentioned that he used to use a spec pressure plate mated to a factory clutch disc. He said it held the tq way better than the spec did. I can get the factory clutch disc from gmpartsdirect.com. With out the Slave/TOB and pressure plate. I would resurface the SPEC pressure plate. Replace the Fidanza flywheel insert. Slap in a new factory clutch disc.

The Questions... Would the Cobalt SS factory clutch disc work for this idea? (assuming it is stronger than our factory clutch)
Do you think this would work in our application or was the 5.0 guy lucky because their factory clutch was built for added power?

Thank you for your input.
Darryn

nope, cobalt SS clutch is different diameter. I've measure both when I was getting ready to start the hybrid project.

Thanks PJ.
What did you think of the rest of the idea? Just using a factory disc from the 2.2?

Most stage 1/2 clutches from after market companies are actually OEM disks, they simply remachine the pivot points on the pressure plate to give it more clamping force. A spec stage 3 however uses a different material for the clutch packs as well as a better pressure plate.

Good info Thank you.
I ended up calling SPEC and I decided to buy the stage 3+ with Christmas money. They sold me on it when they told me it will handle 450tq at the flywheel of course. That is more then I will ever need. Also said that it will wear much slower then the puck style does. Should last almost as long as a stock clutch in a stock car.

After what I have learned about this clutch I would say it is the best one offered for the j body. The only clutch that is stronger would be to get the one in Hahn's Sunfire. That is special order though.

That is so misinformed it's not even funny. Spec is probably the worst clutch available for the J-body... and FAR from the strongest. Sorry.

So what do you think is the best clutch for a turbo ecotec that will be putting down around 380tq?

I would not say mis informed. Everyone is going to have a different opnion on this. People have had bad luck with Spec, people have had bad luck with clutch master's. Is there a best? I doubt it. Every car and set-up is different, and used for different things so what will work best is going to be different.

Far from opinion. Spec is *not* the strongest clutch available to us, period.

Let's not get into the company itself, it's completely awful "warrenty" or its reliability. My LUK clutch held more power and held it longer than either of my Spec Stage 3's.

After looking around and talking to various companies, I went with one that I've personally seen hold 680 lbs of torque in a J-body for multiple dyno pulls and passes up the track in the low 11's. I haven't seen a spec manage that yet without completely crapping the bed in less than half a season.
