Changing slave: What are my clutch options & wear diff?
Friday, October 24, 2008 2:36 PM
SInce i am chaning my slave, should i also change the throwout bearing and i guess depeending on the clutch condition i may change that also. I was wondering i should just go with a regualar stage 1 or 2 , 3 is there a difference in wear (Should i change pressure plate too?). It is just a daily driver, what are my product options and who sells them. Would be nice to get as a kit.

Well your slave and throw out bearing is one unit. As for upgrading the clutch, well not a bad time to do it because it takes the same amount of work. If you buy a new clutch kit it will come with a new pressure plate and TOB/slave.

if you decide to do the clutch you need to resurface the flywheel at a minimum. you can also buy a lightweight flywheel instead. pressure plate comes with the clutch.
if you have no power mods stage 1 is probably fine, stage 2 would wear a little longer but engagement could be rougher.

14.82 @ 97 mph

wow the dealer gave me separate prices for the bearing/slave. which let me to believe the are separate.
What are my manufacturer options and where can i purchase from? What gains will a lighter flywheel provide?
And what is the downside if u dont resurface the flywheel?

thanks

I would not skip on resurfacing the flywheel. If you do not get a new flywheel, you need to resurface the old one. This makes the mating surface fresh on both and it will work better. Spec makes a clutch, as well as Clutch Master's and a couple others. Turbo Tech racing can get you one, Car Customs can get you a clutch, Gravana.

Auto parts store clutch kit. Will be made by the same company as the OEM clutch assembly. After seeing some of the cars around me running on stock clutches and not having any problems I would recommend that route. If i keep my 02 I will be replacing the SPEC 3 with a stocker (assuming the SPEC is shot).

Search for the names and you will find the sites. Lightweight flywheel will help the car rev up faster, but looses revs faster. I love mine.

since u are loosing revs faster it will be more fuel consumption on highway driving?

Loosing the revs faster come into play when shifting gears. highway driving won't be affected (other than less rotating mass for the motor to turn)

Yes the slave and throw out bearing are one unit on these cars.
There has been people who have had issues with Spec clutches. Most of which were higher HP cars. I would not go with a Spec 3 on a N/A car. Stage 2 is more than enough. I have a Spec stage 3 on my 01 Z24. Love it. I have installed 3 otyher Spec clutches on J's ( 2 stage 3's and 1 stage 2) all still running on them to this day. Spec clutch kits come with the TOB (aka Slave/throw out bearing unit with them).

Your car being a 99 has a isuzu 5 speed tranny. I had a 97 5 speed (same tranny). When I replaced the clutch in it many years ago (custom clutch) I bought a TOB from the dealer for $75

Its annoying to drive. Way to light and low of a pedal and its a bit grabby. It works fine. I just dont feel that I needed it after seeing what a few others have done with stock clutches. The 02 was/is far from stock, but its just a POS right now and will probably be going away for a very long time, maybe even for good.

I replaced the clutch in my 98 with a stock replacement unit for less than $200. It didnt come from GM but it was identical (even all the identification markings) to the original one I removed.
