98 Z 24 Tranny dead what would you do?
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 8:04 AM
98 Z24 convertible, 5 speed (MJ1 I think) with 90k on the clock. Car is otherwise in great shape.

Took it to the local dealer, their diagnosis: bent shifter fork (3rd gear).
Shop quote:
$3600 for GM rebuilt tranny
OR
$2900 for salvage tranny.

I can get a 40k mile salvage tranny (MJ1) for $750, AAMCO want $600 to install it
Thinking I may just do the swap myself
What would you do?

Yeah NVG, and buy my kit for $250 plus the tranny for $250 and thats one bad ass set-up. Since you have to have the front mount, and there are none out there, I am making an adapter for the factory ones for the izuzu. The shift cable holders I am making custom as well, actually having 5 made, and 2 are spoken for. Then that leaves the rear that needs to be spaced out, which I have as well. Then all you need to do is unbolt your tranny bolt the new one up with my kit and your G2G.

So can someone link a KB or tech guide to the NVG swap? I haven't spent much time on this site in the past few years and can't seem to find much info.
Thanks

Thanks for the offer on the NVG install doc. I'm not going to start until next weekend (10/25). If you want to email it, my address is kemrich@aol.com

I'll provide feedback as I've written a number of install docs for the GTO.

Just don't get a junkyard or any used tranny, unless you know where the tranny was from, and how the person drived it.

Ahh, thats not true. I have a salvage tranny in my car it works perfect. You can pay $1000 for a rebuilt one of pay $150 for a used one. Just check the speed sensor and make sure there are no chunks on it. Also check the mounting holes and what not. These tranny are pretty well built.

So I got a line on the tranny $250 + shipping but no front mount. Anyone know where I can get the mount?
Also the guy spec'ed the RPO code as MY5 from GM, is that the right one?

Not sure on the code, if its out of a 2.3 HO motor 8th letter on the VIn "A", then your good. As far as the front mount. I found one, but I am having somone pick it up for me tomorrow and thats mine, lol. But I am going to take it to the machine shop and have them make a couple more. Would you be interested in one? Probably around $100 or so. Would be ready to do all welded and what not.
