did anyone snap a driveshaft in half?
Saturday, September 20, 2008 8:55 PM
hey

i am wondering if anyone here on j-body cars ever snaped a drive shaft off .. there about 3-4 weeks ago i got an new Exedy oem clutch in the car and a redone gearbox along with turbo tech racing race poly bushings ..... so tonight i tryed the car on a little slant on the road ... she started off burning in first gear and around 4500-5000 rpm she stopped spinning .. rolled the car back and seen a part in the road . i snapped the drive shaft right in half and tore the cv booth along with it .

so i am wondering did everyone have the experience?

p.s .... i will never do this @!#$ never no more.

today i got the car towed home and looked at the shaft .. it was the small one on the drivers side that snapped off .. i was looking at it and noticed after wipeing off the greese that there was an rust spot when the axle had actually snapped.. i figure that it got weak and thats how it snapped.

if you loose an axle ... can you still drive the car ? my car had no movement what

You broke a driveshaft in a J? You are the first person to ever do that. Considering our cars dont have a driveshaft, just axles.

yes plenty of people have snapped the axle, its not uncommon. No you can;t still drive it, you have an open diff so your car will not go anywhere, but if you'd like you can keep trying till the spider gears in the diff deciede to say @!#$ you I'm out.

update... got it back together with another used axle and works perfect .. that evening when i snapped that axle .. there was alot of wheel hppping and one the tire was down like 10psi sooo i think thats what happened. o also looked at the two pieces and noticed there was alot of rust on the axle shaft its self , a guy told me what useally hapens with an older car with the stock axle it after a long time its safe to replace them with new ones cause they usually weaken up and the strength is not there anymore.

thanks for the help and the funny comments ha ha
