99 Z24 N00b Questions-Blown? Tranny

Hello, N00b in this forum with tranny problems. The search function has not helped me much other than I believe I have the Isuzu 5-spedd manual transmission

First let me say that for the last year and a half my tranny has been grinding when warm on the 1-2 and 2-3 gear shifts...very rarely on the 3-4 shifts...I figured clutch was getting warn...maybe not

Anyway, yesterday I was accelerating fairly heavily after a right turn onto another road when I shifted from 1st to 2nd gear. There was the 'normal' grinding noise and then the gears got 'stuck' and continued to grind...then there was the sound as if the tranny were in neutral (no gear) . I was able to limp home as I still have gears 1,3 and 5 but no 2,4 or R. Also, sometimes when I am in one of the working gears the shifter feels like it will not move right or left. When that happens I cannot get out of gear very easily nor can I change to any of the still working gears.

Did I totally blow the transmission, strip some gears or is it a less insidious problem? Will I have to have it replaced or is it rebuildable?

Any information would be helpful.

sounds to me like you stretched out your shift cables go under the hood with the car off and see if you can get it to shift into reverse (with the car not running of course) then start it and see if it stays in gear

Don't you bottom out?

- Yes I do

Hey thanks a lot for the suggestions....that's exactly what it appears to have gone wrong. One of the cables has broke. I am replacing both as they come as a set of two new anyway and the other apears a bit stretched as it is.

Much better than a blown transmission.

Thanks again!
