I have a 5 speed izuzu and 1 and 3rd gear are pretty much shot. I was wondering instead of spending $800-1000 to preobably get it rebuilt can I rebuild it myself? I have lots of tools but have never done a tranny. I am rebuilding the motor right now and the tranny is next.
If there is a write up or someone that has done it that would be awesome, thanks guys

Yeah but then its a used tranny and I would have to buy another flywheel, mounts and weld, @!#$ that. If it shift nice when its done then I am good. The tranny has 180k on it and its never been rebuilt. Personally I think rebuilding its the best idea.

You don't have to buy another flywheel to use the NVG tranny

Nor do you have to weld anything... i just took the W41 and NVG from my 92 GTZ, and threw it in my 95 over a weekend...
easy as cake!

I'm not against rebuilding a tranny. Done it myself (on a getrag). Also a good time to put a LSD in. If you can get everything you need for $400 not bad, but if it is going to be $800 plus you can get another tranny (new, if you look) for about $400.

Why do you guys prefer the getrag rather than the izuzu? Also quick question. I see that there are two different types of trannys, ny5 and ny550 whats the difference and how do I tell?

Dident you just try to Rip Tom off for his pistons and rods? saying they were cracked? and them list them for sale as in great shape?

Haha, nope. He sent me pistons that were damaged but I had the machine shop clean them up. He told me that they were good but I had to have the block bored 20 over so I told him to send me some pics so I could list them asap, before I even got them. But non the less they are good to go I just dont need them.
