Hi, sincei hav bought my cavy ( november 2007) i got trouble to put it in first. To make it enter i must go in second after in first or play left-right-left-right with the shifter. All the other gears are ok... When i am in gears i got a lot of slack from left to right with the shifter. Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad english

My car has always been a bit tight going into first sometimes too. It's usually if I'm at a stop and have the clutch in long enough that all the gears have stopped turning in the tranny. If I don't expect to sit long, I'll put it into first just before I'm at a complete stop and it will go in easily. By putting it into second, you're essentially just "bumping" the gears slightly so that they'll line up when you try first again.
I would say that this is a normal condition - just never try to force it to go in - you don't want to damage any internal parts or the cables. I put some Shell Mercon V (also spec'd to Dexron III) ATF into mine a couple of months ago, and it seems to have made the shifts easier than before. I had been running Amsoil ATF in there for quite some time, but this feels nicer to me. Maybe it's just getting broken in now, at 220,000km...

This is normal. You can change the fluuid with some B&M, or Hurst and it gets slightly better, but this is how they are. Go into another gear first.

Funny you mention this.. when I first swapped my red 'vert to a 5 speed Getrag, I never had this problem.... it was smooth as butter into all gears, but then again I also had the Team GREEN LSD insert installed..
Now that I've swapped my daily driver from an Isuzu 5 speed to a Getrag... it's hard to get into first gear. I thought it was just me!!
Good to know...

I recommend the Hurst Synthic ATF, but the B&M is much better than stock, but Hurst better than B&M.

I was starting to notice this now too actually.
I also have an hard time after mines been in 5th for a long drive, it will come out just fine, but it doesn't want to pivot without a quick slap. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Its also a fidanza short throw...
you guys are using ATF in your MANUAL and your wondering why its hard to get in gear?? do you even know what the A in ATF means??? go dump the crap and get some real manual fluid...like syncromesh ....as far as why its doing that from i understand its a 1-2 syncro.......i had this problem on the 282getrag and replaced the syncros...solved the problem

the F23 calls for ATF, its built with A LOT tighter specs then a old HM282/NVG550 trans.
it calls for ATF, i would use ATF.
Moving on, i had some issues with my F23 being hard to get into 1st, it ended up being mis adjusted shift cables.
good luck

You need to know what you speak before you speak. It requires ATF.

I adjusted my gray shifter cable a few days ago, now it shifts like new again
Definitely worth the 15 minutes work to find a 10mm socket to remove the centre console
So it is clear that the getrag needs ATF.... but is it agreed that Hurst fluid is best, then B&M, then GM Dextron III?
how do like Royal Purple and the other high end sythetic oils fit in there? better? worse? anyone tried them?
As soon as i figure out why my brand new slave cylinder is dumping fluid out the bell housing i am going to need to fill my tranny back up... And would like to put in the best stuff i can find (as my tranny is currently the weakest link in my driveline)
Also if any of you would be so kind to offer some advice on my slave issues... see the threads:

i thought everybody knew the getrag takes ATF? well you learn something new everyday i guess.
i haven't tried the hurst stuff yet, but I used royal purple in my getrags and they shifted great.
first was always a bitch no matter what... rev matching helps a lot on downshifts while moving, but from a stop sign they're just a bit hard into first.
^ thats the shift cables in side the shifter box not being centered correctly.

Does Royal Purple only make one type of ATF? and if not which type do you use? do they make a dextron III? And who sells this stuff? any of the autoparts places? or just specialty shops like summit?
