Whats up everyone I'm new to the forum and have an 04 cavi 4dr. Its my daughters car now but I'm still the mechanic.
Okay, I have a question for ya tonight My daughter stoped for gas and when she got back in and pushed the clutch pedal it "popped" and went to the floor. There is no tension on the pedal, the spring is still in place but the pedal will spring against the floor if you push it and stay there until you lift it back up then it will stay up until pushed again.
As long as the pedal is down the car will start but it WILL NOT go into gear with the car started, you have to turn the car off and then put it in gear, then even with the pedal down the car will laurch forward when trying to start it.
I got to the car and just started it in gear with the pedal just laying on the floor and power shifted it home so I could stat working on it.
I'm guessing it is the throwout bearing or slave cylinder which I think my be one part in this vehicle,Is that right?
There is what feels to be brake fluid dripping from under the trans and the resivour was almost dry up top, I filled it up twice with brake fliud to get it home though even when filled the pedal did not get stiff or get any better.
I'm hoping someone has had this problem and can tell me what the fix is so I don't have to disassemble a bunch of stuff if I don't need to.
Thanks and I'm waiting for the replies to start pouring in.
Your slave is most likely the problem. You need to bleed the clutch to get pressure again, but by the sound of it it wont last too long. Mine did the same thing, just not as drastic. The fluid got too low allowing air into the system. My slave has an extremely slow leak.
I have a spare brand new slave if you want to buy it off me.

Oh, by the way, it's an internal slave so you have to drop the tranny. (dont know if you already knew that)

Same happened to mine, it's the slave. Drop the trans & g' luck

Thanks for the info, thats what I figured it would be. Did you guys have the fluid leak from underneath also?
Ya I knew I had to drop the tranny, but I just didn't want to.
Did you fix this yourself? I have done everything thats ever been needed on my own cars ,but I've never opened up a manual trans.
Any suggestions would be appriciated, Any tips, or repair manuals that cover this better than other brands?
Thanks
Im yet to fix mine. It's not bad enough to fix it right away. Im most likely just gonna take it to a shop. Found one that will do it all for $450, which is a deal compared to Aamco's $1000 just for the slave. Apparently, it's not too hard on the getrag. You just have to cut a little piece of the subframe off and then drop it out. Some guys on here can do a clutch in about 1-2 hours.
Mine isnt leaking from the tranny yet, but you can tell it's leaking because the resevoir level goes down.
I just have the Haynes manual, i believe... But im guessing this is a 2-man job to drop that tranny. You dont wanna drop it or have it fall on ya. OUch!
If you do it yourself i can sell ya a slave. $100 bucks with free shipping. Or, you can just replace the whole clutch while you're at it. Some clutch kits come with the slave. Exedy kits come with one and so do Spec, but spec is for performance. I dont know if ya wanna put your daughther through that.

I work at an autoparts store so I can get a stock clutch for about 300.00 including the slave. I called a good shop near me and they want 500.00 to install it if I bring the parts. So it looks like I'll be doing it myself with some help from my tranny jack a repair manual and a 12 pack of Coors.
Its going to be a week or so before I even dig into it. We just got back from a 3500miles vacation in this car and I'm tapped. I'm glad it waited to get home before it went.
Anyother tips from you who have done this job? You mentioned cutting a notch out of the subframe? Where abouts would that cut be?
Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it.
I'll have to find the link. It's somewhere here on the forum. Instead of taking the whole sub frame off you can just hack off a section. That way it doesnt screw your alignment. Ill try to find it.

thanks for the link, I'm guessing mine is a 3rd gen being a 2004 and that it has a getrag trans? I checked the alldatadiy and is there a free way to get in or do you need to perchase a membership to view the step by step for the clutch proceedure?
Also is there a chance that my problem could be caused by just a hole being worn into the clutch line? I read that somewhere on line and it seems to have the same symptoms?
Yes, your car is a 3rd gen getrag. That's the tranny the ecotec uses. What type of membership are you talking about???
And yes, people have had hole worn in their master cylinder lines. Always check the master first. Dont over analyze and look at the worst case scenario first.

isn't the slave cylinder bolted to the firewall
check for a cracked line or the see if the rod fell of the clutch pedal it shouldn't but mine did 1 time
the only thing in the tranny is the clutch and throughout bearing
JBO since July 30, 2001
the rod is still on the pedal, when you look up under the dash you can see the big coil spring is in place and the rod going through the firewall moves with the pedal. I have yet to look into this any further since I've been working everyday, but I am getting pretty hopeful that it is just a leak in the line. With my luck though I'm sure its the slave.
Does anyone know which line or where in the line the holes have been found? I hear GM ran the line right over a corner piece of the subframe(possibly) and it happens quite often.
BTW You all rock I appreciate the help.

bro if 300 is the best price you can get on a full clutch kit it'd better not be oem replacement parts. i got my full kit AND a new flywheel for $180.
JBO Stickers! Get yours today!
$180 from where? The kit I found was just listed as a stock replacment for around $280.00, I didn't read up on it because I was just checkin' out my own stuff between customers so it could be better than stock.
As for the alldatadiy what is the secret to getting all the info without having to buy a membership? I got there and it tells me all about it but then there is the buy now spot before I can look stuff up. Anyone here have a member ship and what to share there user id and password...
The master cylinder is bolted to the firewall. Dont confuse it with the brake master cylinder. On getrags the slave is internal. Blows, i know....
I dont have a membership or whatever ur talking about. haha! Sorry. I've never heard of alldatadiy.
As for the clutch, Exedy makes an OEM replacement. You can find them everywhere for cheap, and they come with a slave. Ebay has a few i believe.
Also, if you're getting a clutch kit and flywheel for $180, you're getting crap or a really good deal. Remember, you get what you pay for. Im having a shop down here install my clutch/slave/resurface the flywheel for a total of $450. That's a smoking deal. I would try to do it myself, but i dont wanna jack anything up. It's my DD.

I just did my clutch, Using the exedy oem replacement deal. 175 shipped. Only issue is once I finished the job The slave was leaking so I had to re do the whole job with a brand new clutch set up shipped from exedy again. You def seem to be having a t.o.b issue. Alot of people I know with ecotecs do as you can also see on this forum. A few volvo buddies of mine do as well, seeing as they have a similar t.o.b/slave set up as we do.
Okay I got underneath it today and there is fluid dripping out of the bolt just below the inspection hole for the flywheel. I guessing this means it is for sure the T.O.B, right?
If so my next question is...can someone post a link to the best how to for removing this trans - again it is a getrag.
ALSO does anyone wanna share thier login info for alldatadiy or copy and post the instructions on this, it would help a brotha out!
I've been shopping and the cheapest I've found is $190.00 shipped from a Fla. seller on E-bay. Exedy P/n btw is GMK1000.
Has anyone bought one of these kits from e-bay? how was it? Anyone find an exedy kit any cheaper?
Thanks
I've also found a Exedy P/N KGM08 so which is the right one that one or the GMK1000?
DO NOT BUY THE EXEDY. I made that mistake and now 2,000 miles later I need to replace it because that came with it went bad. The clutch disc box also said it was for a chrysler but I called exedy and they said it was correct. It works but the slave is crap. I'm getting a spec or centerforce this time.

Don't let the punks get to you. If they can't say anything helpful its because they probably
have VERY LITTLE IF ANY MECHANICAL SKILLS . Talking crap is just their way of hiding that
fact. They figure the more crap they say the less likley anyone will know how dumb they are.
Sorry, typing while holding baby. I ment the new slave that came with it went bad. This is a total case of you get what you pay for.

I have no clutch now either.... i just put my engine and tranny back in the car, and the pedal went right to the floor. pumped it a few times and it came up and felt normal. the next morning i stepped on it again and whoosh right to the floor... and this time with a huge puddle of fluid underneath the belhousing.
So i am guessing my BRAND NEW $155 autozone lifetime warranty slave cylinder was dead on arrival, or died soon after install. never even fired the engine up.
So do i just pull the tranny back out and replace it? If it dumps fluid is it definately dead? or is there any hope of saving it?
i have the 2.4L LD9 and the getrag tranny.
