100km/h in 1st gear ... once

Ok, so I have a confession to make:

One day me and a friend are travelling back from the cottage when he mentions that his car will not allow him to put his shifter into first gear at such a high speed (approx. 100km/h) even with his clutch pedal pressed down (some safety feature). Of course i decide that i should try this and find out on my 95 Cavalier 5spd. I figured with my basic understanding of transmissions that with the clutch down the worst i could do is a little grinding. Well i tried it, at first the shifter did not want to go into place and i figured it had this so called safety feature. So i decided to push a little harder just make sure. Now it happened real fast and i can't be sure if i ever actually made it into 1st or pulled into neutral right away. But i heard some of the Worst grinding i'd ever experienced however, i heard no other noises. At no point did i release the clutch, but now there is no power getting from my engine to the wheels in any gear (1-5 and reverse). My shifter can not rotate in a circle, it seems to select all gears and my clutch feels exactly as it did before. I put my friend in the driver seat and had him play with the shifter as i looked at the gear box, the rods and connectors seem to be moving around just as before. I ever pushed the car with him playing around hoping to pop something into place.

If anyone has any ideas where i should start looking i'd love to hear em. I do most of my own mechanical work with my father in our driveway, and i do not relish the idea of attempting a tranny drop with out a lift. And my car is borderline not worth paying someone else to do it. It would be sad to see her go :,(
But i am willing to try just about anything short of a tranny swap, i love to tinker.

P.S. I towed it all the way from cottage country behind my dads mini van with a rope while i steered ... i found it comical

I have tried pushing the car in all combinations of: with and with out the clutch in, in all gears, forwards and backwards.

You need a new tranny, that grinding you heard was the syncros.

the solution: turn in your license. you have no right to have it if you thought this was a good idea to even try.

why on earth would one even consider an attempt at such a task? did you honestly think that it would NOT mess up something? im not trying to be a jerk, but really... my girlfriend who cannot drive a stick read this and said it was a stupid idea, among some adjectives for anyone who would do this.

Get all the parts you need in a pile, and drive the car into it.
They will find their way into the correct places.

This was probably right after the Mythbusters episode where they tried out the theory that you could stop a car faster than braking by popping it into reverse gear at speed. They also tried "park" with an automatic. In their case, neither car would allow it.

You can put the selector in park but the park pawl wont engage until about 2 MPH. It cant because it doesnt have enough time to, but when it does @!#$s going to fly.
