Hey everyone I have a 2005 cavalier 5spd i have a bout 85000 k on the car know and i want to change my fluid and i know its takes automatic fluid but has any one else put anything different in there trannys?
Syncromesh is recommended. Either GM or Pennsoil. Pennsoil is 1/2 the price of GM.

Isn't the Royal Purple Syncromax acceptable as well?

Wrong. Syncromesh is only for Izuzu transmissions, not the Getrag.
The getrag takes Dexron 3.

Where is the drain plug? For the ld9 getrag if that matters.
If its the same as the L61 Getrag (i think it is)
There are allan key bolts that are flush with transmission.
Crawl under and the one you want is near the back and more towards the driver side, looking from the center of the car.
I stuck an allan key in there and put a piece of pipe on the end of it, gave it a whack to break it free and took it out.
Don't forget to remove the fill cap from the top of the trans to speed up the draining.
A long flexible funnel will help for filling, they sell ones with petcocks on them where the funnel is a measuring cup and the tube is flexible, perfect for this job since volume is important and the fill cap is hard to reach.
From memory I want to say it was 1.8L to fill but DON'T quote me on that! Does anyone know the proper amount?
I used Mobil 1's Dexron 3.

Correct, buy two quarts of a nice Dex 3 or better automatic transmission fluid. After you have drained the old stuff like Adam has pointed out, fill it back up with about 1.5 quarts of fluid. From there, there is a plug (looks the same as the drain plug) that is about 6 inches above the drain plug. Remove that plug and stick a pen or finger in there (when the car is level) and if it is full, you should be touching the fluid. If not, throw some more in and test it again.
Adam is correct and you use about 80 percent of your second bottle of fluid.
I have used both GM syncromesh to AMS oil synthetic ATF. I would recommend the AMS stuff over the what the dealership put in my car (syncromesh) because it was difficult to shift when warming up. I only had it in the car for about 50 miles before swapping it for the red stuff.
00 cavalier (5 speed, 2200) 84 chevy c-10 (v-8, 700r4) 64 volvo 122 ( everything......)
I used the Hurst hot shift synthetic. It's a 8mm allen wrench that is needed. I also went ahead and put both quarts in the tranny.
actually, dex3, or any dex3 trans fluid is best, its rumored that too good of a film can cause the syncs to not work as they should.

Wow Chris, I got hosed at Autozone paying 14.99 each.
.... no i meant the standard Dex 3 is 1.99..... there is no need for anything else, although trick shift (the non-synthetic stuff) does get rid of gear rattle.
