I have checked the manual fluid on my gf's 97 sunfire gt before. We took it to a shop to have them change the shifter linkages. Tonight when I went to check it there was no dipstick- plug. When I look down at the top of the tranny, on the left is a wire harness that plugs in, and has a bracket and bolt attaching it to the tranny.. To the left is a red cap- plug. I saw somehwhere the newer gts do not have a dipstick. Am I losing my mind or on a 97 gt should there be a dipsitck? How would I check the fluid level and add fluid with this setup?
Well I'm sure someone else could probably help you better than I can. Both my 98 and 99 cavs do not have dipsticks that stick up out of the transmission like the oil dipstick does. Instead there is just a small cap type thing which I think is the red cap that you see. If you can get to that and get that off it has a dipstick on it that is a few inches long. Hope this helps some.
if it's a 5 speed, you wont be able to get to it from the top of the car. you have to get underneath, behind the driver's sidce wheel, and look up. there should be a little white lever, CLEAN IT then flip it up and take it our and read it. try to keep the car as level as possible, if that means raising all four corners on jack stands, so be it.l
