I've been through dozen of pages of posts looking for tips or tutorials on how to remove a 3-speed auto tranny from a 97 sunfire.
I can't find anything. Can somebody who has done one tell me what i will to do to get the job done?
What tools will I need? General procedure?
I have the 2.2 engine if that help
Its really not that hard how to figure it out. Time consuming, and a pain to get at all the bolts yes.
1) Un hook battery and unhook all electronic connections with transmission and shift cable.
2) Safely secure the car and jack up front end enough to slide a transmission out the bottom.
3) Remove wheels and cv shafts from trans mission.
4) Remove the starter and remove the 3 torque converter bolts through the hole.
5) Remove the brace from lower radiator support to sub frame on driver side.
6) Support the motor by any means possible safely and not by using the oil pan. Get your cherry picker and strap it to the tranny safely.
7) Remove all bolts from tranny to block, including the one on the passenger side support bracket.
8) At this point the only thing holding the trans in place is the trans mount and your picker.
9) Unbolt the tranny mount from the frame and from the transmission it self to allow for some side to side clearance while extracting tranny.
10) Lower trans mission onto some boards so it can be pulled forwards out from under neath the car.
Thats pretty much it from what i remember when i pulled my motor. Someone else have anything else to add go for it. Just take your time and put safety first and double check the motor is being supported where it use to mate with the tranny.
^^Pretty much.
My tranny is out right now, I took my 4speed out by just removing the subframe,(along with everything above mentioned) made it a whole lot easier..

Shouldn't the speedometer sensor (for non-mechanical speedometers) be removed before pulling the axles?

VSS is located on the transmission on the passenger side output housing towards the firewall. The sensors at the wheels are for ABS. They do not have to be removed prior to pulling the drive shafts.
Hi dont mean to jump in but i have a quick question. Im in the process of pulling my engine and was wanting to know how many trans bolts there is and where they might be at? i have 7 bolts incl. stud nuts , is that it?
