98' Isuzu Tranny problems! Need help

Ok, normally I can find what I am looking for on here and I appreciate all the great information that is given on here. I have searched, but I'm just not finding the info or solution to my problem. It may be right here in front of me and I just don't know it.

The transmission is a 98' Isuzu manual tranny in a 98 2.4l. My problem is I noticed when I let out on the clutch I could and start to roll you can here a little thumping noise. Its not hard enough that it vibrates or anything but enough that I noticed it. We jacked the car up and we could tell that it wasn't pulling like it normally would. We were hoping that it was a axle or hub or something like that. Have checked all of that and it wasn't it. Can anyone give us some advice on what it would be and what you have to go through to fix it. Thanks in advance. And if I just wasn't entering the right search, let me know what I should put to search for and I will find it that way.

Jim

Where is the noise coming from? Front or rear?

Have you had rear brake work done recently? Could be the shoes hanging up. While both shoes look similar and have the same cutouts for hardware, one has less material on it (the rear one) and if swapped will cause a similar "thump" noise when you take off after braking.

The noise is coming from the front. Took it to a transmission guy and he said it sounds like the cluster gears or something like that. Thanks for the response though.

Jack the front end up, leave the trans in gear, spin one tire (other tire should spin the other way). Is it smooth? Or does it grind or catch a bunch?

DIFFERENTIAL, most likely. Get ready to put a Transmission in...
