4-spd auto/3-spd auto car?
Tuesday, May 27, 2008 3:00 PM
hey everyone,
does anyone know everything evolved in swapping the 4 speed auto to a 3 speed car.i have both cars side by side and im putting the 4 speed and motor out of one thats totaled in a good bodied 3 speed auto car(with a locked up motor)
I have searched the site and found some posts on the topic but none with a list of what i need to switch over.most just say don't do it!
well i have both cars and im gonna do it,if someone has some advice or knowledge on the subject,i would appreciate any helpful info.

i've never done the swap so anyone can feel free to correct me and don't take this as 100% correct

you'll need:
4 speed tranny taken off a car with the same engine as the one your putting it in (housing is different for different engines)
both axles
tranny mount
shifter
shift cables
center console (not too sure if a 3spd one could work)
wiring harness
ECU/PCM (4 spd is electronically controlled)
BCM (not sure about this either)
radiator or an aftermarket tranny cooler

I'm definitely missing things. the list doesn't seem too bad but the wiring harness and ECU changes could be problem causers.

What year is each car? depending on the year of each some things may be slightly different in computers and wiring

the 4 speed car (donor) is a 96 and the 3 speed car (receiver) is a 97.both rally sports.
i have read that the only wiring you have to change is the engine bay harness, not sure.
the 3 speed car came out of a junk yard and had the transmission in it,but im not sure if it works and i dont wanna find out the hard way.

okay got it done.in case someone has this question in the future.
i had to change:
the transmission (of course)
the mounting bracket
the axles
the engine bay wire harness from the connection under the breather forward including the E.C.U/P.C.M.
the transmission coolant lines
the shifter
the shifter cable
the gauge cluster,if you want to see if your in 1st or not (i didnt change it)

This really wasn't a hard swap on a 97 model,im not sure how bad it would be on a 2000 or later model.it prolly took me about 10 hour,by myself,i swapped motors
transmissions and everything listed.

thanks for the help sleepy sunfire
