Getrag sudden failure.

Hi,
First of all, thank you for the parts breakdown sent to my son for the Getrag.
I just bought a 2007 Ion Level 2 with a Getrag 5 speed for my teenage son.
While teaching him how to start out on a hill, he was a little too rough on it.
It made a noise like it popped out of gear and now it won't work in any gear. It makes a growling noise and won't move.
I can't see or hear anything wrong while wheels are off ground and I manually spin wheels and shift gears.
I dropped the trans and inspected the drive axle splines and clutch. Rotated input shaft while observing the axles and listening. All seems normal.
Could someone suggest what to look for next?
I'm an aircraft mechanic but have no experience with transmission work.

you should still have warranty. I'd let the dealership deal with it, I understand the urge to fix it yourself, but if its a blow trans your better taking it to the dealership.

Will it not even shift with the car sitting still?

Hi,
Yes it shifts fine into all gears.
I don't have a warranty because it is a salvaged title.
Trans worked smoothly before this happened.
The clutch and pressure plate seem ok.

did the shifter cables break?

I've heard of it happening before

No the cables are ok. Thanks though.
We just got the case apart and gears look good and differential seems good but a little sloppy (clatter a little bit when rotated but could be normal) .
There are some gouges inside the case like something was floating around in there. The magnet was laying there but it probably fell out when we lifted the gear box housing off the clutch housing. There is nothing else laying inside, not even chips.
Could the clutch have failed but appear normal? Where would the cracks be if the pressure plate failed?
Anyone have any ideas?

Seriously though, can you post up some pics of clutch, pressure plate, and tranny tear down. I think it would help.
