I have a 1999 Chevy Cavalier with a auto trans...i just got done changing the motor and tranny and now i'm having a prob with it...when i start it and go to put it in drive it stalls. but when i unplug the big plugin in the front of the tranny i can shift it into drive and it will go but it will be in 2nd gear i have to wind up on the gas to get it to go any where and just doesnt shift. could this be a sensor?? or just a wire??? any info is great
The big plug on the front is the locking torque converter clutch. If it is sticking, the car will certainly stall when placed in drive from a stop. It basically locks the converter so there is no "torque converting" between the engine and trans.
Of course, its only a locking converter if you have the 3T40 (3 speed). If you have the 4t40e (4speed) its electronically controlled. If your drive selector says P R N D 2 1 then you have the 3 speed. If it says P R N D 3 2 1 then you have the 4 speed.
