**HELP** Changed engine oil, now problems shifting - NOT MY CAR!! OH GOD!

Hi everyone,

I know nothing about Sunfires...I build off-road trucks.

My girl is like, "Honey I'm going to get my oil changed." I say "Naw, don't waste the money I'll do it..." Changing oil is changing oil.

So I get the oil and filter (couldn't use it, wrong one) and I drop it from the pan and refill it. Figured I replace the filter later that day. Plain and simple. Nice nasty black oil...

Car starts and runs fine, checked all the levels and dropped it off at her office. She calls me that evening (yesterday) and says "Honey, my car is shifting really weird and the check engine light came on." Jerking between 1st and 2nd and it's really noticeable.

What in god's name could I have done? I'm 100% positive I didn't drain the ATF for the trans that's a given. Even if I did I was checking the engine oil level as I was filling and it was empty (obviously) and then filled up with about 5.75 quarts. If I didn't empty it it would have over flowed...

Do I have a case of pure coincidecne and know I need to buy tranny for her? Good god...

It's 2001/2 w/ the 2.2 Ecotec Engine in it w/ an Automatic

Thanks all, I really appreciate any help!!

EDIT - I left the old filter installed BTW... I didn't pull it and leave no filter. This could be read that way.

an oil change will not do anything other then help it run better. the old filter would have not made that much of a differance. their is another problem here not connected to the oil change unless you left the oil plug lose.

What did you drop from the pan???? The oil filter for the ecotecs are located on *top* of the engine right next to the intake manifold. Its the black plastic cap w/ the hex head on it.

Just dropped the oil I mean. As in "drained it" from the pan.

If you just drained the oil and didnt touch the anything else, then i would believe that it is an unrelated problem that chose to appear then.

Get a OBD 2 code scanner and pull the code. That will help alot. You dont have to buy one, autozone will do it for free.

have u taken the intake system off for any reason? if so.. did u leave the IAT sensor un-plugged?

That's what it was! I forgot to plug the (I assume) MAF plug which is right where the oil filter comes out.. Check Engine light is still on need to grab my code reader from the shop and I will reset it. It's back to driving fine though.

Whew! thanks everyone!

I know my 2.4 takes 4.5... I would think the Eco is close to that. When I first saw 5.75 quarts that kinda threw me back that it took that much oil.

Yep 5 qts, even with the filter. We dont have a spin on filter. We just have an element and the housing is located almost under the intake manifold.

So what does the IAT have to do with the transmission shifting? I work on old motors most of the time, and funny shifting was always a tranny problem. I have an 01 Cav now that I'm working on and it's doing the same thing. Autozone won't pull the codes for free anymore, and I don't know anyone with a code reader. Any one want to enlighten me on this one?

advance auto parts pulls codes free... check there... most places will do it. if not, buy a reader they are really cheap for what you get.

if its fine now, disconnect the battery wait a while then reconnect it. poof code gone. so long as its driving good again, who cares what the code was?

the iat being disconnected tells the computer it is -40 degrees outside , and in doing so the computer does quick upshifts and locks the tq converter , its a attempt at reduced power causing the motor to lug and keep the tires from spinning on the ice

The computer wont see anything. The code that would have popped up would have been an IAT sensor circuit fault or low voltage. Our cars use a NTC thermistor for the IAT sensor which increases resistance as the temperature goes down. If you open the circuit it will read a circuit fault. Instead you need a very high resistance to most all of the 5v reference voltage before it returns to the computer. In this case the car begins running in what I like to call. "Oh @!#$" mode. Cooling fans kick on, it runs pig rich to prevent detonation and it raises line pressure in the transmission which results in harder shifts. a -40 reading from the IAT will not set a code. Its designed not to. Otherwise j-body owners in alaska would bitch.

sorry... High resistance to DROP most all of the 5v reference voltage before it gets back to the computer.

TEMPORARY THREAD JACK! Okay. so Ecotecs take 4.5 to 5 quarts, what do the 2.4 and 2200 take?

I'll eventually take the time to put something here. I swear.
