Ok, so here's the story. About 1-2 months ago my clutch started getting spongy and loosing a reservoir full of fluid every 3 weeks or so. Well, this past Sunday when it was in the single digits the clutch pedal finally went completely limp. I filled it back up, bleed it and it was fine for about 3 hours, then the fluid was completely gone again. I figured it was the clutch master cylinder so I replaced that on Monday and bleed it, etc.. and everything was great....until the next morning, no clutch pedal again and no fluid..grrrr. Well, I filled it back up yesterday morning, bleed it again and went to work. On my lunch I came out to my car get in, get home everything was fine and normal, then when I leave back to work the clutch pedal was completely gone..but this time there was fluid in it still......wtf?!!! I bleed it again and it helped a little but not much as I had the same issues today.
I know I needed to replace things when the problem first started but between xmas, going on vacation and a doctor's visit, I had no money at all. So here's my problems summarized:
1) Clutch pedal will be normal after bleeding
2) Sometimes in the matter a few hours the reservoir will be empty of fluid
3) Sometimes I'll have fluid in the reservoir but still no clutch pressure
4) Replaced master cylinder
5) Cannot see any obvious puddles of fluid under trans
6) Some fluid around bottom tube of Master cylinder(clutch) and the bottom of the clutch reservoir
The car has 135,xxx miles on it and the stock clutch. I am purchasing the Exedy clutch kit on ebay this Friday which includes a new slave cylinder, but wanted to get some opinions. This is the only car between my Fiancee and I for now and it has to be used everyday, 50 miles roundtrip for her and about 25 roundtrip for me. I just don't want it to leave her stranded. Any ideas? Bad *NEW* clutch master? Slave cyinder? Pressure plate?
Thanks for any help!
Jason
Sounds like a clutch actuator.
Pardon my ignorance, but is the clutch actuator another term for the Clutch master cylinder?
whoops, I meant slave cylinder. If you have already replaced the clutch actuator (master cylinder) the only thing left would have to be the slave cylinder, unless you have a leak in the line, I would check that first.
sounds like ur slave cylinder is goin out... my did the same thing but the fluid would b empty with n 3 -4 weeks.. im putn a new tranny (used) and clutch n my car this weeknd.. just get that new clutch kit that will help alot
Why would you have assumed it's the master?
Unless you're visibly leaking fluid at the top of the engine bay it can't be the master. You wasted $$$ by guessing.
Get under your car and look at where the trans meets the engine... there will be fluid coming out from inside the bell housing.
The real issue is your slave cylinder / throwout bearing is shot. Change it soon because you're putting brake fluid all over the clutch and ruining it.
In order to replace it you need to drop the trans.
Good luck.

Slowly but surely may some day win this race...
Well, just had the clutch, pressure plate and slave all replaced and back on the road a few hours ago and so far so good. The only thing that I don't like is with this new clutch, the pedal is sooooo soft, to me almost too soft. I bought it from Advanced auto parts and it is the Perfection Clutch brand.
Not looking for high performance from this clutch as I have my toy car, but man, it's just weird to have a light pedal. Anyone have any experience with this brand?
