Last week while on my way out to Wisconsin Rapids the car decided it didn't want to shift past 2nd gear. Needless to say it was a long :censored: ride at about 35 using side roads. After letting the car sit for a night everything worked properly. I have no idea what could have caused this and wouldn't really worry about it, but the car is doing it again! Does anyone have an idea as to why it would be doing this? For those that don't know I have the 4 Speed 4t40 transmission. Thanks for your time.
Haven't researched 4t40 transmission yet, but I have reason to believe, MAYBE your governor is sticking in the in position. You need to check the condition of your fluid/filter as they are the best indicators of the overall condition of the automatic transmission.
isn't this the 4T40E, that is, electronically-controlled, and therefore, no governor?
OK, had to go brush up on my auto trans stuff really quick,
the Vehicle Speed Sensor does more or less the same thing as the governor, but through the PCM and a solenoid-operated valve, rather than directly through fluid pressure like a governor. so basically, what caveman said is one possible cause of your problem...
Damn, I'm glad I've got a manual

Yes your absolutely right. I had a feeling, thats why I said this...

Was your speedometer acting up when you where having the tranny problems? .... If it was... thats a dead givaway for the VSS causing it..... if not it's probably something else... (bad pcm... sitcky valves ect...)
No it wasn't. Every once in a while, even at idle, the engine would rev normal, go low enough to where I had to check if it was indeed running, and then return to normal. All this WITHOUT the tach moving even an inch.
just sell it and buy a cav....haha
