ok, so this noise is bugging the hell out of me i want to see if there is some help. Ok the noise is a light grinding noise when going below 15 miles an hour and not on the throttle, just coasting. The noise also happens above 50 when your off the gas, but its more of a howling/whistling noise now. Its an 03 sunfire auto. Any answers thanks in advance.

Reading helps
My guess would be something with the planetary gears or fluid. Check the trans fluid. Is it low, overfilled, discolored, or smell burnt?
What makes you think its the transmission? its a strong possibility, but there are other parts that will mock this noise your hearing.
If your sure this is it though check your fluid, then move on to checking your line pressure in all gears.
im not pointing it straight at the trans, it just seems it would be that seeing as it only happens completely off throttle, as soon as you hit a little throttle, it stops. Ill have to look at the fluid on it, whats the easiest way to check it.

This is the only way I know of:
-Jack the front of the car up and support with jack stands - or use some ramps.
-Apply the E-brake
-Get an 11mm socket with a ratchet
-Clear disposable container
-On the front drivers of the Transmission look for a bolt which is located under the transmission cooler lines.
-Use caution when loosing it as you could have a mess and your goal is to lose as little fluid as possible.
-Allow about 2cc of transmission fluid to drain in the clear container.
ill try that tomorrow if i get the chance, thanks.

Don't do this... you need it with the car level. Jack up all four corners, or don't jack it up at all.
And the bolt you want isn't the pressure tap point by the lines... it's on the passenger side of the transmission, above the axle. It is an 11mm, but the one mentioned above isn't. (The actual procedure is listed in the FAQ too)

I'm pretty sure the automatic transmission in the 2003 Sunfire is the same as the one in my 2003 Cavalier, so the procedure is the same. He can still acquire fluid through this location as I did (with an 11mm), and it does need to be jacked up to do this. I'm not familiar with the way your mentioning so I will refer to the FAQ...done. Interesting, you can still get fluid from either location.
thanks guys, ill have to wait till this weekend to look at it, it been going on for about 4 months now, in which time something ate up my vss, the end was all scratched up on it. i hope im not having any big problems.

How would you know when the car is jacked up to the correct angle? If you jack it up a little more, it would change the level at that hole, and give you the wrong impression that it's full, or overfull, or low... see what I'm getting at?
GM recommends checking it with the car running, level (jacked up is fine... but jacked up even all around) and using the designated check hole so you get an accurate level. BTW, that stuff in the FAQ is from the official GM service procedure.

Dude I know what your saying, I should have been more specific. What I was originally trying to say was
to just check the CONDITION of the fluid only, rather than checking if it's full as this is not necessary according to
GM if there is no signs of leaks.
Condition, oh yes... absolutely... that's a much easier place to check it then
