Well iam looking for a nvgt550 to swap in. I found a 89 grand am Le with a 2.3l lo quad 5 speed just wondering if this could have the tranny i have been looking for ?
From what I have found on the internet, the one you want paul is only in the 93 and 94 quads.
where did you find that information???
does the nvgt550 even have shorter gearing.
From what i have been reading the isuzu has the shortest gearing?
I'm wodering the same thing because I'm looking for one myself.... I do know that the final drive ratio is different.... I just don't know if it's higher or lower..
Also... I think those tranny came in some 2.3 HO equipped GTZ's.
What are you getting for pricing on a NVG tranny.... I wan't to make sure I don't get ripped off when I get one...
93-94 cars with a 2.3 ho. ive got 2 one is a bit under the weather
but i may revive her. just call a junkyard and ask for a 5 speed for a 93 grand am gt with the 2.3 ho, they will reference others it is in 4 u
^^^ Ya... speaking of that Gary...... let me know if you ever make a definate decision on that..... I'de be willing to pay ya more for it if your willing to rebuild it depending on the price man..(I really don't feel like rebuilding one myself) I'll even drive to your house and pick it up.. I just don't want to end up buying one and having you decide you want to sell it 2 days later..
SO what is the actual differences in gearing ???? shorter gearing. or is the only difference 5th gear being a lil shorter in the nvg.
^^ I've been trying to get some one to tell me that forever.... the only person that I actually know that has one converted from an auto.. so he cant tell me what the difference was.
Either way.. I'm not putting another Izuzu in there.
Like stated above, you want the 93-94 transmissions ( Beretta, Grand Am, Achieva )
I think these are the ratios and they are pretty close to what is in the 2.4 Isuzu with 2.2 3rd and 4th gears
1st - 3.50
2nd - 2.05
3rd - 1.38
4th - 1.03
5th - .80
FDR - 3.94
I could be wrong but I think only the Muncie 282 trannies with the 3.61 FDR has the .72 5th gear

ya the older ones not in the w41 (w41 had 3.94 i think) had 3.61 fdr, whereas the 93-94 HO with internal salve like we need had a 3.94 fdr. and weebel if u remember from the first meet we had, me vs the white z with close to the same mods and an isuzu = i tear him a new one
^^ oh ya... I remember that... that was funny as hell... to tell ya the truth... thats pretty much what sold me on the nvg tranny to begin with....once I found out that it was tougher than an Izuzu... I knew thats what I was going to replace my pos tranny with
btw... the nvg is geared higher than the izuzu... by how much I'm not sure yet (I'll have to wait to hear back from ^^^)... but it sounds like it's a 10mph increase at redline in 2nd gear... but we don't know for sure yet.. either way.... it will def help with 0-60 times since you can't hit 60 in second with an Izuzu.
I hit 60 with my rev limiter moved to 7500 also Iam I really going to gain anything from swapping other than a stronger tranny. wouldn't shorter gearing be helping more in the 1/4?
Paul, what's the scoop? Im waiting on getting an LSD in my Getrag before I can get my car running again. You still interested in the trans and shifter cables?

With a n/a car its more crucial that when you shift it doesnt drop out of the powerband.... So that being said the nvg t550 from the w41 was made to keep you in the powerband while coming out of turns... I <3 my nvg t550 besides the fact that its aged and you can tell. 100k+ miles on it.
Plus its taken LOTS of launch abuse from the track. 30+ track runs from me with 25 of them being on drag radials. I think its a perfect match for your motor as long as you get the w41 gearing.

only the 91 and older trannys had the 3.61, my 92 282 has the 3.94's.....
