Basic Transmission Question
Sunday, November 11, 2007 2:59 AM
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could give me a short write-up on how to check, and change my Transmission Fluid. I have a 99 Manual Z24. Sorry for such a newbie question but I was wondering if someone could tell me what to do exactly underneath there. Thanks ALOT for any posts.

I live in a small town and i asked around and it will take about a week to get. Just wondering if you could answer a question for me. I checked the dipstick and there was a fair bit on there. But i pulled (what i think was) the drain plug out, and only a few drops of the red fluid came out. Was this perhaps the filler one?

Straight from my Chilton's manual
1.Remove the filler plug(dipstick)from the left side of the transaxle to provide a vent.
2.Raise and support the car using jackstands
3.Drain plug is located on the bottom of the transaxle case.Place a pan under the plug and remove it.
4.Aloow the fluid to drain completely, check the condition of the plug gasket and replace if necessary.Clean off the plug and replace, tightening until snug.
5.Fill the transaxle with fluid through the fill or dipstick tube. You need a funnel or hose to pour through.
6.Use the dipstick to gauge the level of the fluid.
7.Replace the dipstick
8.Take a drive,stop on a level surface,and check the fluid level.

You don't even need to change the fluid necessarily but it can't hurt so might as well change the filter.I think it's just like the oil filter, screw on type.I have an auto so.....

Hey thanks alot for all the answers its been much help. I filled it back up. A little too much, it spilled out a little, is that going to be a problem? It shifts better when its idled for a very long time, but its still a little rough. Any ideas?

Hey,

I am still having problems shifting. The problem is within neutral. I have to push/pull it with both hands to get it to where i want it to go. Once I am in 1st it is easy to shift into 2nd, but hard to get up and over into 3rd. Once I am in 3rd it is easy to get into 4th but hard to get up and over into 5th. Does anyone have any ideas? Any input is muchly appreciated.
