Sunfire gt with broken transmission

I found a sunfire gt in great shape at an awesome price, the only problem is, the transmission is gone (5 speed manual). How hard is it to get the transmission, from what other cars could i get it from? I know the z24. Basically i need to know what is a good price, i have seen about 500 bucks! Thats just way to expensive. and what cars might i be able to get one from. Thanks.

What year GT? If it is supposed to have an Isuzu in it then $500 would be a damn good deal. I just put a brand new Isuzu in my 98 and it cost $2050 after tax. If its a Getrag that is supposed to be in it then $500 is a little high.

Its a 96, and i cant find any locally. I might have to buy a whole car, or i might not bother with getting the car, or maybe getting it and parting it out.

Its hard to find an Isuzu in good condition. I look for a long time before buying one from GM. The cost of a low mile Isuzu was almost the same as a new one. Like I said I paid $2050 for mine. That was at 10% over dealer cost.

Depending on what the intended use of the vehicle is the "almighty" Getrag isnt always the best choice. I have destroyed (destroyed meaning repair cost exceeding replacement cost) many Getrags and only 1 Isuzu. I could have easily repaired the Isuzu for far less than replacing it but wanted the ease of mind knowing that I had a brand new trans in my car. I want my 98 to be able to get me around for another 80K miles, if not more. The Getrag swap would have been a very poor option in my case as the additional cost and labor (I do my own work) would have far exceeded any benefit. Honestly I trust my Isuzu far more than the Getrag. One diff. verse multiple second gear syncros and a locked diff.
