noise when coasting 5spd

Just rebuilt 2.4 motor, new clutch and rebuilt transmission. Took it out for a drive. Runs fine except when coasting or decelerating I get a rapid ticking sound. It goes away when I push in clutch. Sounds like it is same speed as engine. Don't hear it when car is sitting with motor running. Happens in every gear. Transmission shifts up and down fine, zero noise when accelerating. I'm thinking of following:
Possible throwout bearing, maybe needs better bleeding, although then it would make noise all the time. Input shaft on transmission with poor gear backlash? Anyone???

Little more info. I think it is one of the CV joints. I hear the noise even with clutch in although much quieter. Coasting, clutch out in neutral with motor off.
I'll post in suspension forum.

you drive with the "motor" off (I assume you mean the engine)? around here that's actually illegal (technically...)

Well, I guess that's the first time I've ever broken the law. Never heard of that law. Cops could do real well there when a car stalls etc, give them a ticket as well. Really brighten someone's day.
Now, if you have something constructive to add, I'm all for it.

On second thought, this is probably the correct forum. I jacked up the car and turned the wheels, you know, the things with the tires on them? Couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary. I crawled underneath the car only thing possibly is the right side (passenger) inner CV joint moves a bit. The input into the transmission will move about a 1/16" and the CV joint has about same amount of play. Doesn't seem rough when turning it though.

Took it back to the trans shop. They said it is the transmission! Now I have to pull the transmission or should I say drop the transmission. Got to figure out how to do it.
