3t40E

A friend of mine attempted to pull his motor. The dummy didn't unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel and was trying to pull it out with just the three bolts holding the two together. I guess when he bolted it back together the car dont go nowhere. What may be wrong with tranny? It is full of fluid. However I noticed that the fluid was NOT moving through the tranny. Cracked the outlet line going to cooler and no fluid comes out (with motor running). Would this be the front pump? I don't have much experience at this stuff, but I told him I would try and help him out. Lets say it is the from pump how much of a pain in the ass is it to fix? I know that this is a 3t40E tranny, and is computer controlled. Anything I should be looking for or any onsight would be cool.
THanks

if its the three speed (3t40) there's no e and it is NOT computer controlled. however, if it's the four speed (4t40e) that IS computer controlled. it sounds to me, if he yanked on it hard enough, he could have damaged the pump. if that happened, yeah, you'd be going nowhere fast.

Did he slide the torque converter in all the way? Gotta slide it in and rotate as you do so it fully engages on the splines and the pump, or it won't work right.

You are correct. No "E" on that 3t40. Would that mean that there is going to be a vacuum line attached to the tranny??? If there was no vacuum line attached would that keep the tranny from moving any fluid?
THanks

No, the torque converter operates the pump, the vacuum line modulates shifts. If its not connected, you'd at the very least still have 1st, and could probably just shift it by hand from there, to 2nd, and then drive at the right speeds, but its not good for the trans.

Heres what he did. He tried pulling out the motor and didn't unbolt the TC from the flywheel. So he unknowingly slid the TC forward and then decided to bolt the two back together. Well the splines didn't line up and he pretty much sheared the splines on the smallest shaft. Well he didn't shear them but their pretty muffed up. His car is a grand am '93, 3300 v6 204. I'm having a hekk of a time figuring out exactly which tranny it is. I'm pretty sure it's comp. controlled. Cause there is no place to plug a line for suction. Only a vent tube. The number I got off the thing dont jive at all when researched.? 3ARC or something? Man, what have I got myself into!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I figured it was a good opportunity to learn something at someone elses expense. jk

The TH125C / 3T40 isn't vacuum actuated either, it uses a Throttle Valve (TV) Cable. The cable is connected to the throttle body next to the throttle cable. The TV cable is adjusted differently, depending upon the model car and the year. You best bet for adjusting it is a manual such as Hayne's or Chilton's. The only electrical connections are for the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC), shift indicator lights (if equipped), Speedometer / odometer pick-up and back-up light switch.
