Hi, I have a 96 cavy 2.2 5 speed. Could anyone tell me what tranny I have? I haven't been able to find much in the search..
Thanks alot.
you have the isuzu transmission. just out of curiousity, why do you ask?
Thanks, thats what I thought.
I wanted to know because I was looking for a rebuild kit and on Autozone's website for a 96 they said it was for a muncie and that confused me...
Also any opinions on rebuilding an isuzu tranny? Or would a swap be a better choice?
I want to keep things as simple as possible and my car won't be seeing any major HP anytime in the distant future...
the main problem is the differential going out. the spider gears are weak and dont hold up to abuse that well. i have heard that the 2nd gear synchro likes to go out also, but have never seen it happen. i rip on my car pretty hard and chirp second on a normal basis and havent had any problems. if you arent running any extra power to it or burning out all the time a normal rebuild will be fine. the autozone kit with synchros is $225 which is probably a little under what you will pay for a tranny from a junkyard. with a rebuild you have a better tranny than if you just put one in from a yard. as far as swaps some put in getrags but if your not throwing much power to it, its not worth the effort.
i am going to use the isuzu with my new turbo motor and im not too worried about it. i am planning on doing a geo storm spider gear swap.
my only other thought would be- are you mechanically inclined enough to remove and tear into a transmission. im not doubting your abilities but it is a bit of a task.

No that's cool. I am not personally very mechanically inclined but both my brothers are, so I do have help.
The main reason that I'm asking about a rebuild is that my tranny is starting to shift hard into first and sometimes it's weird coming out of second into third. Also my slave cylinder needs replacing so while I have the tranny out I might as weel fix it all at once if possible.
I don't want to throw in one from a yard because you never know if that one is better or not.
Like I said though I don't really drive it that hard at all, no dumping the clutch and burnouts. So I don't want to go through the mess of swapping to a different tranny because I think this will hold up for me. And again my car probably won't even be seeing 200hp, atleast not for quiet some time.
Thanks for your reply it was really helpful!
Cody.
well im glad i could help. if you need anything else shoot me a pm or e-mail. good luck with the car!
