so heres the thing. my clutch is going out so i need to replace it. now when i go buy the part at autozone its asking me if i have the MJ1 or MK1 transmission and i have no clue. as far as i know its just the stock transmission that came with the car. is there any way to find out by reading it somewhere in the car?
RPO codes on a sticker on the bottom of the spare tire cover. Look for one of those codes.

You might want to look at a SPEC stage 1 clutch by the time you get the throw out bearing and such (included in the SPEC kit) it maybe cheaper.

sorry to whore into your thread but i thought i'd keep this one going verses starting a new one, anyways i to am needing to replace my clutch and was looking into the spec clutches and wondering if there are any problems from using them on a daily driver.
I've got about 20k miles on a Spec stage 1 and I daily drive it everywhere, road trip it, and autocross it. It holds up great to everything my Z24 throws at it. Just as easy to drive as the oem clutch as well.
For my other car I've got a spec stage 3, it's not my DD.

Just got a Spec Stage 1 on my '98 Sunfire GT. Definitely seems fine around town, although when combined with the Fidanza flywheel, I have to say it's not quite the same as the OEM clutch...I've stalled it a couple times actually because it definitely engages "quicker" or something like that, can't really explain it. But that was mostly within the first couple minutes - and also, as I said, with a lightweight flywheel as well. In general, it does feel pretty damn close to stock, and I anticipate probably after 1K miles or so when it's fully broken in, I probably never will remember the slight difference then...
Ok so the 96" does come with a throw out bearing? I bought my spec stage 2 clutch 4 years ago and it never cam,e with one and maybe thats why my car shifts funny. If i shift under 2500 rpms its shifts fine but any thing above it it grings goign in to 2nd and 3rd and some rtimes fourth. Its like it doesnt build up pressure for it to go in to the gears propperly??
