Won't go into 1st gear
Sunday, July 01, 2007 4:58 PM
Drove the car this morning, everything was fine. This afternoon, drove to gas station fine. Went to leave, and the shifter started squeaking (like rubber on rubber), what causes that? Then pulled into parking lot and I can't shift smoothly into 1st gear. I have to go out of second, back into second then in to first. Or back into any other gear. So tranny or clutch? 2005 Cavi Eco, 43Kmiles

It's a j-body thing im assuming cuz i have the same problem every once in a while. Then only thing i can recommend doing is putting it in second first then throwing it to first, thats the only thing that works for me.

check the cable that goes from the shifter to the trans mine did that for awhile and then just stopped going into gear...the wire had came out of the cover that is around it and was frayed....i think i paid 180-190 for a new one

I have the exact same problem with my 2002 Sunfire GT. I was thinking that either my clutch was acting up or the shifter needed lubricating...anyway, after reading this thread, I'm wanting to ask the guys at GM about it (as I'll be going there Monday or Tuesday anyway for an unrelated reason).

add me to the list of shifter problems! I hate cables. Why cant we have shifter links instead of cables like hondas? I hate that @!#$!

Wow that is totally crazy, i have a 2001 z and i have the same problem....had it then ruined the cables got brand new ones and does it still...I got a few friends with lightened flywheels on other cars that kinda do the same thing and they notice by tapping the gas pedal a little allows it to go right in.

ya know..i had this exact same problem..had it for ove a year..had to go into 2nd before i could throw it into 1st..let the car roll or give it some gas and it would pop in...after i installed my TG LSD this problem no longer exists..i really wish i knew exactly why..all i can tell you is...my synros were fine, i replaced the shifter rail bushings and installed new shifter rail detents..other than that i didnt change much but the 1st problem is pretty much non existant after i put it all back together..so if anyone plans on having their tranny i apart maye those cheap parts will help with the problem..

Mine literally broke on me after squeaking for a week or so.

Right after i had bought my car, like 2 weeks after, i was trying to shift into first and i pushed and it popped, the shifter than fell limp and lifeless as if something broke.

I took apart the car in the packing lot and found out the plastic bracket that was holding the ball of the shifter in place broke out of the socket. I popped it back in, and no more squeak, and no more flacid shifter.

I also red-greased all the shifter components and it is so smooth

I've been having the same issue, and I took a look to find that the "main pivot housing" is cracked. I guess I just need to go to the dealership and buy another. Or of course the local junk yard. It's just a pain to replace that part. Oh well...
