Well, my NVG tranny bit the dust. I believe the syncro for 2nd gear went out. I can shift into second at RPM's below 2K, but anything higher and it just grinds and won't go in. I don't feel like fixin' it, so the '01 Getrag trans in my garage with 14K on it is looking pretty good. Only thing is I need a clutch.
I had a SPEC Stage 2 clutch for the NVG trans and had nothing but trouble with it. Went through two clutch disks and a pressure plate. They replaced everything, even out of warranty, and it works good now, but I'd rather not go with SPEC again. What are my other options? The car is supercharged right now with the M45, but will probably be turbo'd by next spring. I'm shooting for around 300 HP, so I'm guessing I need a stage 3 clutch.
I do have a stock clutch for it right now. Think that would hold up to the M45 S/C for the time being until I can get some more money next year to buy a staged one?

Honestly the SPEC Stage 1 is the best way to go for the money. You get a Pressure plate, disc, TOB/slave and alignment tool. For the price and everything you get it is most likely your best best.

But the stage 3 is only $50 more, is it not? And stage 1 isn't going to be enough for when I go turbo next summer...

True, if you can do it right the first time and save some $
Also if you get the "+" series SPEC clutch kits, we have never heard one compliant, I run one and would never use any other kit. The "+" series are designed for series high HP cars (Over 250 HP IMO)

Damn, that's alot of money for a Bully clutch. I tried looking on their website, but their site and product layout is poorly designed. Hard to find what I need. Also, no descriptions for torque specs.
Aaron, is the warranty any different on the "+" series compared to the regular ones?

err, torque capacity... a stage 3+ can handle more torque than a stage 4 for example, but is supposed to feel/drive like a normal stage 3... sprung and unsprung hub difference.
HELFENBEIN wrote:I just got my trans swap done (Isuzu to Getrag), and in doing so, downgraded in clutches from SPEC Stage 3, to SPEC Stage 2. For me personally, there's a huge difference. The Stage 3 grabbed like a mother#%$^@!, whereas the Stage 2, though it does it's job, is a little more casual about it. I'm not saying by any means that the Stage 2 sucks, but even if the price for the Stage 3 was a considerable amount more, I would fork out the cash and go the Stage 3 route.
But, that's just my opinion, and right now, I hate all J-Body transmissions and anything to do with them... LOL
How do you like the Getrag trans?

why does everyone think you need to upgrade clutch's?
My OE clutch lasted longer than my tranny did, (120K) bracked raced cuting 2.0 60' for 2 years, when i replaced my tranny it looked great, had a broken spring, but i atest that to how i drove it. Brian (speedracerZ) ran his Turbo Z24 at 15 LBS and 12.8 1\4 MI with a stock clutch...
I HATE my spec S II, the disc is really graby, but the preser plate is a joke, if i blow really hard, i swear the clutch pedle will go down.
Both my old 91 AWD DSM and my 1992 Q-4 HO GTZ have\had a LUK clutch. when i replace the one in the Z24 that is what i am runing with.

Stage 1 is OEM equvalant, that is what I was getting at.... It just includes everything you need... Maybe cheaper than a local auto parts store piecing it all together.

Autozone to get the clutch kit (pressure plate and disc) then off to a GM dealer for a Slave TOB.... That is what I meant.

i love my spec stage 3, ive felt stage 2's and by comparison id never get one, the stage 3 just grabs like a mo-fo, and u plan on the turbo id go with that one man. plus you dont live in a traffic infested area now do you, im always goin through the twin cities and it can be a bit rough but i can live with it.
Shifted wrote:I will never own another SPEC again, went through 4 clutches total, 3 on this car, one on my 98. Personally I'm going with Bully Clutch for my next one, but they are expensive, $800 for a Stage IV.
X4 with the spec JUNK
CenterForce is a LUK Clutch with a different friction material on the presser plate side.
BUT my next clutch will probably be a piece together, LUK Gold plate, and a some ceramic disc with friction material all around (not in pads like spec S2\3).
If I need on it guess.
