i just want to make sure that after changing filter and gasket, when refilling, you need to fill up some, and then start the car, run the P->1->P on the shifter, and then remove the plug and fill until it starts coming out, WITH the engine running.

yup, thats correct, they also want you to let it idle for about 5 min first as well.
ya wanna do mine too?
filling from the top? and you're filling it til it pours out of the top?
i was asking this question a while ago, but didnt get much response back

Nope, there's a plug you pull on the bottom, well side, of the tranny and then you fill from the top until it comes out of that hole.

god i hate gm sometimes. wtf is so hard about putting a dipstick in a 4t40e? a lot of gm cars have them, just none with the 4t40e.
right, w/ the engine running correct

All right, the trick is after dropping the pan and changing the filter, depending on the temperature of the tranny, you should have lost approximately 6.5 quarts, so when i did mine earlier this week i put back in 6 quarts of fluid, started the car and you have to sequence in in every gear range waiting in each one for a min of 3-5 secs. Than pull the plug which is located on the side of the tranny just above pan level. Its located just below the passenger side axel. Then begin filling in the top, while its still running, untill it begins running out. If you have the plug out while the motor is off you will lose a lot of fluid from it settling back into the tranny pan. You must do this on a level surface, prefferably with a hoist, otherwise you'll get to little/ to much fluid.
this seems more appropriate than a new topic, so does anybody know how much the 3 speed takes, is it 5 quarts? and does the P - 1 - P and engine running method still apply?
ill have to look again, but when i checked i only found one "plug" and i could not get it to budge.
what are the effects of having not enough fluid in the tranny?
There's three plugs down there - oil, tranny, and some vacuum thingy.
I'm not exactly sure the damage but I know when my mine was low, read approx. 5 quarts, when you idled in drive, the car wouldn't move and when you gave it some gas the revs would increase but the speed wouldn't.

over time not enough fluid can ruin the tranny, but if you drive it without enough fluid it will shift wierd, i.e shift points will be wrong and/or it will slip going into gear. Theres two plugs on the tranny, one towards the front of the car facing the radiator( i believe this is the plug that you use to add a temp gauge?) and a plug right next to the cv axel pointing towards the passenger side.

how did you "read" 5 qts low exactly?
Like Vorian said....its on the pass. side right above the pan. pretty sure its an 11mm bolt.
how do you get multiple quotes in a post???

Take it as...

And I could tell because we had to add that much.
