I believe 2 gens use a cable. I know my 89 cavy did.

92 uses an electronic VSS, im gonna go out on a limb and say all the electronic VSS for the 3speeds are probably the same, so if your talking 5spd you could probably make something work as well if your using an izuzu trans
Nah its a 3 speed im asking this because in my beater cav its a 95 2.2 the tranny went so i wanted to make sure everything would work right.
