Metal shaving in tranny
Tuesday, June 19, 2007 5:58 PM
I search the tranny forum but couldn't find anything. When I got my tranny looked at the shop said there was alot of metal shavings in there. What does that mean for my tranny and for my budget?

It means your tranny is on the way out and your budget may be tight.

It also could mean you are fine for a year.

It varies but in any case its never good. How many miles? what type of driving (city/High Way)

Okay my car is almost done to the tune of 1,500$ What happened was that the torque converter would get over heated and start to be shaved. Thats not good from the sound of it.

Yeah, I see that a lot where I work. Typically, people wait too long to change their transmission fluid. In addition to lubricating the internal parts, the fluid also dissipates the heat away from them as well. If we notice metal filings on the dip stick, for the most part, we'll deny servicing the transmission fluid, as whatever damage has been done, it has already been done and cannot be reversed. Also, when fillings are present, in many cases, collections of these have formed internally. When the fluid is changed, these become dislodged sometimes and more harm is done than good. I've seen fluid replacements done on vehicles in this state that have made it only about 1 or 2 blocks from the shop and then had the transmission die completely.

The lesson here, change your transmission fluid and filter at regular intervals, not your transmission.
