It's actually a big pain to shift relative to the stock shifter. Anyone have any ideas why? I didn't install it, my brother-in-law did. Just wondering if there are any common causes to it being so stiff.

It's pretty easy to bend the shift cables during removal or installation of the shifter. If those are bent it can make shifts feel like that. I'm sure it could be a dozen other things too.
My car always shifted stiff-ly(??) After a couple weeks my B&M has gotten much much much smoother. Try it without the boot, i know that was hanging me up a lot until i shaved it.
