Ok my shifter cables broke and a year ago... So I replaced them but its never been the same smoothness. Recently its getting a little stiffer going into 3rd/4th and downshifting into 2nd grinds slightly. Now when racing and I want to slam 3rd/4th it kinda stops right before you get in gear and I have to kinda give it the extra ughhh. I dont like that @!#$ man! lol. Whats causing this...? nothing binding around the shifter.. I also took the input shaft of the tranny where the cables hook up and cleaned it good. Im also running about a quart of 80w90 or something with the stock fluid. <<< this should cause anything?
Man the isuzu sux. I have a 99Z 5speed. Mine starting grinding thrid and second. I took it in for a rebuild and the grinding stoped, and it felt tighter again. But it still shifts like the crap. Is ay that b/c i just got a 2001 Z and the getrag has 150K on it and it fells way better and shifts way smoother than my rebuilt isuzu. Dude just change over to synthetic that helped a little it felt smoother. But its gonna feel like crap man. Well at least in my opinion it does. And it was rebuilt by Aamco Transmissions and I saw the parts.
the isuzu tranny doesn't take any kind of gear oil, it requires synchromesh fluid, which is synthetic, and is formulated completely different from straight gear oil. and that tranny only takes 2 quarts of fluid. you said that 1 quart is gear oil...?
I drive a '99 Z w/ the same tranny. it grinds going into 3rd, and i've changed the tranny fluid twice in less than a year. the first time i changed the tranny fluid, it stopped grinding, but the second time it did nothing and i have to slow-shift it into 3rd. F--- it! i'm getting a Getrag.
My isuzu in my 99 gets pretty grindy if its low on fluid. I'd suggest draining out whatever you put in it, and starting with 2 fresh quarts of synchromesh as suggested earlier.
It's mostly because the plastic synchros are effin worthless. Mine used to grind on about every 1-2 shift, then I babied it around for 2 - 3 months and it stopped grinding totally even under hard shifting.
