4T40 Problems

Hey everyone,

I've got a '96 Cav, 2.2L and a 4T40 tranny. Recently (I'd say within the last week) I've had problems that made me feel like it was the TCC going bad. The car was stalling after driving for about 30-40 minutes, I'd let it sit and cool for 10-15 mins and then I'd be able to drive it again. So, no biggie...

I took it to the shop and was told that its not the TCC, but a leaking needle bearing inside the transmission. They'd apparently need to take the tranny out, and replace the bearing which was going to cost me almost $2000.

Now, for a car that I bought for $4000 about a year ago, that doesnt seem right. I know parts can be expensive, as is labour, but is that really a $2000 job? Needless to say, I'm thinking over my options as to what would be the best solution. I mean, the car is technically still driveable, just not for long periods of time.

Can anybody shed some light on what this needle bearing actually does and why it might cause this problem? To me, it just sounded like the TCC, but apparently I'm wrong lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

you are right. That is not a good deal. That is basically like buying a 6000$ car. I think that this is the best place to get help but I do not know much about trannys. Your best bet would be to do some research and pick out your best option

for 2 grand you could convert to manual if you wanted to. if thats what they want to charge you, it would be cheaper to replace it with another 4t40.

I was actually just thinking that.

Right now, its got an auto, and I'd probably go to another auto. How much would it cost to swap to another 4t40? Assuming I can get one for a decent price...

Mine seems to be doing the same thing. I was told it was the torque converter solenoid stuck in the open position. I hope we don't have bigger problems....

I would try installing a tranny oil cooler ( aftermarket from sumitt that have different sizes all bigger than the stock) to keep trans fluid at a low temp since you said the problem goes away when you let the car cool.
