Hey guys i got a price from gm racing on a 4t65e and it is over $6000!!! Does anybody here know if you can run the transmission as an od unit and not a 3-speed? Im looking more for a street car not a race car. if anybody has swapped this transmission yet let me know. thanks

Unless I'm unaware of some wacky new GM Racing creation, the 4T65E is a 4 speed overdrive, not a 3 speed.

^^ when its built to the full drag-car specifications, the overdrive is disabled.

To my knowledge, no one has put a 4T65 in a 3rd gen J. I know of one person who was attempting it into a 1st gen, but I have no idea what ever came of it. GM did make a mount kit to fit it into the Cobalts for the Phase 5 cars, but I doubt it would work in a 3rd gen as at least the trans mounting is completely different. Not saying it can't be done, just saying you probably won't find much help here.

As to keeping overdrive, just do a more mild build. Head over to clupgp.com to check out what the grand prix guys are doing to keep it holding up under power. From what I know, there are 9 and 10 second cars without much more done than upgrading the chain and final drive, and putting in the hardened input shaft. ZZperformance.com will modify your 4t65 to handle a butt-load of power as well. My advice though would be to make sure that the trans will fit in your car before going any farther.

Here's pretty much a step-by-step writeup straight from GM on how to build the trans too.... http://tunersource.gmblogs.com/Racer-Tech/ECOtec-L61-Build-Book/gmtunerhydra-matic_4T65_race_transmission.pdf

AFAIK the 4T65E is physically too big for the 3rd Gen J chassis. But it is a hearty piece of work that I would give a nut to have.

actually the 1st versions of the GM drag sunfire , had a 4t65e in them , and back then the stock frame rails were still in the car

granted i believe they were modified or the trans was , or both

I'm not sure what trans you have stock but i'll bet it was designed for those exact conditions.

Thats not true, Sebastin (the one who originally installed a 3800 into a 3rd gen) used the 4T65E. We have measured everything here as we are doing a frame and mounts for an auto right now and it does fit. Also the GTP guys have had all kinds of issues with the stock tranny, with the input and output shafts being the major week links. From what I have seen 350whp is the limit of those tranny's before a full rebuild with new stronger parts are needed.

It'll fit in there with a Ecotec motor no problem?

I can't see why it wouldn't, you may have to get some axles done up but that shouldn't be a problem if you are at this point. The side of my block sits in the same place that the side of an eco block would sit.
