eco swap tranny issues
Wednesday, May 02, 2007 10:55 AM
i had thought everythign was worked out but apparently not. drove it to the exhaust shop and picked it up and drove to work with no problems, other then the speedo gauge stopped working, well taking it home frome work and got onto the road and up to about 50mph and it went out of gear. the speedo started fluctuating at this point. now its slipping in an out of gear, its an auto. sometimes if i hit the gas and got it up in the 4grand range it would slip back into gear. sometimes i'd have to go down to first gear to get it to engage (again this is an auto) not sure whats going on. im pretty sure my fluid level is good but im going to check that again also i noticed when i was sitting at a light that i had to put a decent amount of brake pressure down to keep the car from going. it was idling around 1400 when i got it home and maybe that was the issue any infor or help would be nice. not sure if maybe its some vacuum line i forgot about or something electrical or maybe just a bad tranny.

Your having tranny issues too. Dam.

My car goes into gear, but it wont go in gear when the car is running, but mines a 5 speed.

I want to share something with you - the three sentences that will get you through life. Number one, 'cover for me', Number two, 'oh, good idea, boss', Number three, 'it was like that when I got here.'

Check your fluid first. Did you fil it and check it after swapping in??? I would really not drive it anymore until you find out what is up. Make sure the car is level when checking ther fluid as well.

yeah ive done that a couple times. since this was the first time out driving and getting up to 50-60 mph range (other then a 20mph drive around my block) i thought, maybe the fluid has redistributed itself and is low again, i'll be checking that again to make sure its okay. someone mentioned the vss on the back of the tranny. anyone know what that is?

also remembered this last night

i remember having some of the same symptoms on my old 4 banger mustang. had the rough shifts, hard to keep it stopped with the brakes and idle running high and it had been a simple vacuum leak. but im not sure of anywhere on the eco where a vacuum leak could occur to do the same thing. when we first were testing the car idle was around 900. now its 1400 so im at a loss.

That is your speed sensor, which works the speedo. I know with that diconnected the car will not shift out of 1 gear.

if that was acting up or going bad could that be causing the issues?

and where would i find it to look at it or replace it.

if its a bad sensor and causing the speedo to work and not work , it would casue a tranny problem before you see it at the speedo

the VSS goes into the pcm first and processed , then sent to the cluster for the speedo

and id difenetly check the fluid also

well when i drove it around the block the first couple of times during my first testing run it did go in and out of gear a couple of times while the speedo seemed to work find. then the when i went to the exhaust shop is when the speedo went out and then got crazy so if the vss is maybe shorting out. maybe working half the time that is why the speedo is fluctuating and why its possibly going in and out of gear perhaps? think i'll just try and get a new vss tomorrow and test that possibility along with checking the fluid again.
