So it appears I have a transmission fluid leak on my 97 2.2L 5spd. I took it to get its oil changed yesterday and the guy told me that the trans fluid was very low, and there appears to be a leak.
A little back story - last fall I had to replace the steering knucle on the front passenger side. I had a buddy come over who's a heavy duty mechanic apprentice to give me a hand. In the process we had to pull the drive shaft out of the transmission, which of course caused alot of fluid to drain out. We put it all back together and the next day I went to get an oil change (which I needed anyways) and requested the transmission fluid be topped off. Anyways, that was about 10,000 miles ago. So it may have something to do with that.
Any idea if the leak could be the result of this, and what could possibly be wrong or need to be fixed? Or other things to look for? I'll most likely bring it to a proper mechanic or transmission shop, but would like some knowledge before I go in.
Thanks
Get under the car. Look at where it's leaking from. That's your best bet rather than us guessing over the internet what is wrong.
More than likely the dipstick isn't sealing and may be leaking (I've had this happen), or the axle shaft seal is leaking. Worst case - input shaft bearing seal.

So took it back to the oil change place, since they said if I brought in the right fluid, they'd top it off for me. Took 1.5L (about 1.5Qts) to top it off.... it looks like its leaking from where the passenger side drive shaft connects, so it would probably be that seal.... I don't think it should be a hard job for a shop to do.... I get a lil intimidated with anything but basic maintence honestly, so I'll probably just take it in, or get a hand from someone. Has anyone had this happen? Any estimate of what it woudl cost to be fixed? Its easily accessable. Also, what is this seal techincally called, so I can go in with some knowledge!
Thanks.
