What model of transmission do I have?
Monday, April 09, 2007 2:58 PM
Ok, I should be slapped, and thrown up in some tree someplace for asking such a question. Believe it or not, I use to know things like this but since my J has been less of a priority for me I have forgotten a lot of things..

I didn't find anything in the search, so who knows.. Maybe this will help more people in the future..

I have a '99 2.4 5-speed Sunfire. What type/model of transmission do I have T340E? (or is that just the auto).

Also, Does anyone have a part number of a rebuild kit for it and a reliable resource to order it from? Specifically, I need synchro's.

Thanks!

So it's just Isuzu? Without the fancy model number adding to the ease of finding parts?

...If it's just Isuzu, maybe that's why I couldn't remember a 'model number' cause I remembered Isuzu...

I'm sure you're right, but why am I remembering the MK7 to be the 3-speed auto 2.2 tranny?

I found the part number for the '99 5-speed 2.4 transmission: 97131255

Looked the number up on: http://www.gmpartsdirect.com - $1800~ (YIKES!)

I also found an excellent resource for parts and numbers in another thread at the bottom of the first page.

Sooooo good! w00t

So, just for clarification's sake..

The 5-speed Isuzu tranny's model is MK7, and it's denotion for the 2.4L is 3T40 or TH125.
The 5-speed Isuzu tranny's model is MK7 is the same for the 2.2L.

They are exactly the same despite having different part numbers (which still sort of makes sense because they bolt to different engine's).

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY

2.2L Eng P/N : 97131256
2.4L Eng P/N : 97131255

So, I guess the next question I should ask is are they REALLY identical?!? Even down to the bell housing?!? If I bought a 2.2L MK7 (97131256) tranny it would bolt up as a direct replacement to my MK7 (97131255).

It just seems too good to be true..

no no no.

all transmission were the same for 2.2 and 2.4, except bell housings.

MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

manual 5 speed trans:
95-99: isuzu mk7
00-05: getrag (i believe the designation is mm5, but dont quote me on that)

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

auto 3 speed:
89-02: 3t40 also called the th125c
auto 4 speed:
95-05: 4t40e

to dissect gm's designation system for auto transmissions:

4(designating 4 forward gears)
t (t or l, t for transverse FWD or l for longitudinal RWD)
40 (torque rating)
e (if there's an e, its an electronically controlled trans)

now, between the 2.2 and 2.4 isuzu manuals, there is a slight difference in the gear ratios, and the bell housings are not the same. BUT the transmissions are the same. all this information is also in the faq if you still arent quite sure.

Thank you soooo much Rich!

That's exactly what I needed!

I will also take a look at that FAQ to see what other jewels of information I can gather.

...I wonder how difficult it is to swap bell housings... Probably not worth the hassle..

Thank you Thank you Thank you

eeeehhhhnnnnttttttt. try again! the 2.2's had a slightly different gear ratio. pretty nice gearing actually if you combine it with a 2.4
engine like i did! he he!
