Manual trans. fluid 95 Cavalier, sorry if it's been answered.

Finally got a transmission for my latest Cavalier project. My first 5 speed and I'm looking forward to it!

Thing is, I was told to use 85/140 gear oil in the transmission. Does not seem right at all to me. Was going to call the dealer tomorrow but looking through the posts I want to try and confirm, Synchromesh is what it is supposed to have? I've got alot of time in getting this thing together so I want it to be right. Took transmission from a 95 and was told 95 was a split year, so just trying to get it straight before I screw it up.

Thanks!

Got it figured out I guess. Assuming Synchromesh is what you use in either the getrags or isuzus I'm safe.

And what does that statement have to do with this?

Back on topic,

Any 80+ weight gear oil is totally incorrect for any J-body transmission.
Since the beginning of the J-body, GM has used 5w30 motor oil, Auto trans fluid, and synchromesh as manual transmission lube. The common link between them all is that they are 5 to 10 weight oil (really thin).
Gear oil, typically 80/90 weight or 85/140 weight is way to thick to properly be pumped through trans properly and will lead to failure. It will also make the trans shift like its filled with concrete.

Synchromesh is the GM recommended oil for all 95-up J-bodies w/manual trans.

It is also available at Autozone.

very true, sounds like you know your @!#$! but i have to argue your point about the oil being "pumped" through the trans. there is no pumping to it, it is lubed on a splash system.
in other words, the trans is at least 25 to 50% submerged in oil all the time and the gears spinning pretty much sling the rest around inside the casing, lubing the parts.
syncro mesh is just what what you said a thin high temp gear oil, thats it , nothing magical about it. i would recomend it if you can afford it but it's not necessary. you're
not gonna destroy your tranny cause you used 80/90.

Actually it is definitely pumped, but I can see how you think its not due to its lack of conventional specialized oil pump.

The input and output shafts are hollow and rifled (kinda like threaded) and there are pickup tubes at one end of each shaft.
one is in the end cover for the input shaft.
the other is under the bearing on the clutch side for the output shaft.

These tubes flow splashed oil into the ends of the shafts and the rifling actually pumps the oil through a threading action to each of the floating gears on the shaft.
