how much can the 4T40E take?
Sunday, April 08, 2007 9:56 AM
I'm toying with the idea of boosting by zedder but I'm curious as to how much the 4T40E can take (reliably) as this is a daily driver. I'm planning to exceed the spec. of 190 ft·lbf. Still really fresh here. I would appreciate the input.

It can take a lot

search skilz to, hes pushing a lot of power

and im completely stock now... so i WAS (one of) the faster(est ) person/people with this transmission

i was pushing 250 toque at lower boost and i ran higher boost (17psi) on drag radials at the drag with race gas and i never had a problem with my tranny... all i had for the trans was a cooler and temp gauge and synthetic oil

The 190 ft./lbs. is the maximum engine torque. The maximum gearbox torque is 325 ft./lbs. Honestly, I don't know the difference between the two ratings, but since many boosted autos are pushing well over 190 ft./lbs., I'm guessing the 325 ft./lbs. rating is more realistic of what a stock transmission can handle...when taken care of, of course.

to be honest with a good cooler no hot lapping and a shift kit.

no one really knows the max. know one has blown one with sheer power. yeah with enough abuse and heat theyll go at any level, but on a good spec temp trans, they just havent been tested.......yet

spilner, nice seeing you here, man.

what do you mean by the term "hot lapping"? i've heard this in racing terms but it doesn't apply in context. fill me in if you would.
i'm on my second tranny now in my olds alero, as my first one was slipping, but i think that can be chocked up to high mileage + power.
i have the new tranny in now, and i'm installing the gmpp blower, so this question fits perfectly.

hot lapping means sort of what it says makeing runs while the car is hot. basiclly running and geting right back in line and doing it again without letting the car cool down.

the reason this is such a bid deal with autos, is because the number one killer of autos is heat. if the trans heats up to much it fries. plain and simple. with a cooler and breaks in between runs, youd be suprised what this thing can hold.

its largely why so many other companys use GM trannys.

I plan to make a sleeper out of my 03 Cav, doing a little research on the right parts and steps to take. I want to be some where in the neighborhood of at least 400-600 hp. Im curious on what steps i need to take to prep the trans for that kind of power.

I haven't been here in a while,

but I remember hearing something about manually shifting the 4t40 causes is to tear up sooner

I know that on mostly stock motor the auto knows best when to shift. but when you get into cams, boost, ect. your optimal shift rpm moves up. can something be done so that you can hold out the shifts without tearing @!#$ up or is this even nessesary?

are you refering to the ratchet shifter? If so, I belive I read somewhere that you only need the B&M system for firmer shifts.
