Performance clutch causing trans failure? - Transmission Forum

I took my car, 01 Z, in to get the trans checked out because it was making weird noises. The tech said at the least I probably wore out the input bearing because of my "high performance" clutch. I only have a stage 2 SPEC clutch. Its advertised as slightly more agressive then stock with longer life.
Is this a load of crap or does it have some weight?

He is taking the trans off tomorrow so we can properly diagnose the problem, cause there is definitely something going on.

i think now i have heard everything at the worst a bangy or aggressive clutch causes more damage or wear to crankshaft thrust surface and bearing
I don't know if its my spider gears b/c I have a getrag, and not as many people have problems with them in my trans. It could be though, I did a few burn outs before I learned how bad that is for our cars.
Should I have to tell the tech to look at the TOB or is it something they should look at in a general transmission check? He did hear the noise himself so I am guessing if he thought it was that he would check it.
I just talked to the guy, the trans is off the car and they will be tearing into it after lunch. I will post what he tells me this evening.

Ok so I have some bad news. The mechanic said the shift forks are bad, syncros, input bearing, clutch is glazed, and more. Basically my trans is a pile of @!#$. The mechanic said "the clutch (spec stage 2) is probably the main reason why the trany died so fast."
I bought the car with 47,xxx miles from a Chevy dealer that took it in as a trade. About a year ago, about 52,000 miles, I had the clutch and the fly wheel replaced with a SPEC stage 2 and SPEC light weight flywheel. The trans started making weird wobbling noise last fall, but the really bad stuff didn't start until November or December. It now has almost exactly 60,000 miles on it.
He said right now its looking at about $2000, and he wants to put in a Luke clutch. Anyone ever heard of them? He says they are good clutches and a well known company in transmission circles. I made it clear I wanted a performance oriented clutch and his response was he warranties this Luke clutch for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
I was also thinking it may be cheaper to just buy a new trany. Will a Grand Am trany have the right mounting points and such? I found one in my area for $450 with 62K on it.
I am not doubting the trany needs this much work, I just refuse to believe this crap he is throwing me about the "instant" grab on the clutch causing very pre-mature trans failure. I even discussed the many higher levels of clutch offered for our cars and how this one is sold as slightly better then stock. Please any input on any of this is welcomed.

Luc clutches are ok, they are stock replacements, not performance clutches. I had one for 4 years... it was fine but it was no performance clutch.
Your clutch did not bend your shift forks, blow your synchro's or ruin your input shaft bearing. Ask him for an explanation as to how your clutch affected your synchro's and your shift forks... I'd love to hear what he has to say. (It should be an entertaining mountain of bulls#it)
Have you seen the clutch / flywheel since he took the transmission off?

I was trying to get him to explain it too but he just gave me some bull about this happening on lots of Honda's and crap. He is offering to let me look at the trany and such but I was/am unable to get to it. I was dropped off at school and now I am in Spokane, Washington on a tennis team trip. My dad might have gone to see the trany and talk to the guy today but I haven't talked to him.
Part of me thinks some of this crap has been going on for a while. The SPEC clutch never "grabbed" any harder then the stock one, and It couldn't handle more then 5 trips down the track within an hour, but because of the long lines that wasn't a big deal. This whole thing is just a friendly reminder I still have much to learn about how cars work an the such.
Thanks for the input so far. Sweetness if I talk to the guy again I will try to get some better answers, I am very curious as well.

Just gonna put my two cents in on this hole "your clutch is the problem" thing...
I killed the stock clutch at about 105k by doing too many burn outs... I took that opportunity to put in a clutch masters stage 1 clutch. I'm now at 146k with the stage 1 still going strong. The clutch does kick in quicker, and it makes racing a lot easier. I don't grind gears either cause it requires me to push the clutch in all the way in order to shift...
Anyway... The clutch is NOT causing all these problems. Period.
One more thing. Is it me, or do a lot of people seem to be having a lot of problems with the Spec clutches?

I see this question come up a lot. Wanna know what I've found from researching the people that have issues, not only in Js but other cars? That the people with SPEC Clutches seem to be hardest on their cars. Whether that means we're just crazy drivers or we trust the SPEC enough to abuse the cars more, I don't know. That's just what I've noticed though.

Well, everyone says I beat up my cars, but I disagree. I've seen much worse. But I will say that the clutch masters taught my friend Matt how to drive a standard too...
Does any getrag from an LD9 fit into the a cavy as a direct replacement? I really need to know cause the tech says its going to be cheaper to buy an already rebuilt trany then fix the one i got. He isn't willing to search for any tranys other then the ones on cavy's. I found an 2000 Grand Am LD9 who's trany was $450. Much cheaper then the $2600 he wants.

Finally an update! My parents decided to have a different shop look at the car, they had done work on most of our cars. He tells me the trans does need to be replaced, $500 instead of $2600 and he says the clutch is fine. So the short story is AMCO tried to rip me off. Or they were being overly cautious. Either way its getting fixed, for a lot cheaper then we were originally told. But I won't be able to race it anymore, until I can pay to fix it on my own.

I just want to say I got it fixed for around $900. It drives better then I ever remember, had the car for about 1.5 years. Just wanted to let everyone know it is fixed and it drives great.
I never had a chance to talk to the mechanic that ended up fixing it, my dad did it, so I never heard exactly what was wrong with my trans. Thanks for all the input from the org.

I have a terrible problem with my SPEC Stage II and my SPEC Flywheel...the parts are crap...if you want a clutch i would highly suggest ClutchMasters...the comment you get what you pay for comes in handy...the spec stage II is only 375$ if i remmebr....thats still under the price or right at the Clutch Masters Stage I.....so yeah...just my two sense
